General Topics / Another m20 flywheel conversion question
« on: October 29, 2007, 02:32:11 PM »
I did some searching and couldn't come up with an answer. Do both flywheels have the same diameter? If so, wouldn't it be possible to heat up the toothed ring on the m42 wheel, remove it, and then install it on the m20 flywheel? That way you could still use the m42 starter. I took a look at the flywheel I have at home and it seems like it will come off, I've helped do it on  other vehcles. Put the flywheel in the freezer overnight, heat the crap out of the ring with a torch and knock it right off. Anyone done this, or tried it?

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / m10 to m42 swap

OK guys, I have a complete 318is parts car, and the m42 is going into my 318 circa 1985. Any idea what has to be changed aside from the obvious (motor, tranny, harness, ECU) Do I have to change any of the fuel lines? I'm thinking the fuel pump has to be changed. If anyone has evcer done this, please let me know.

How-To's / DIY M20 flywheel conversion

Did you do this part?
"You must remove the shift lever, which looks like a wishbone,(part number 8 on the diagram) from the M42 starter pinion gear and attach it to the new M20 starter pinion gear. This is relatively straightforward. See the diagram for details (photo 12)."

I will have the engine out of the car, and seperated from the tranny soon. What  sort of preventative maintenance should I do while it's out. Water pump, timing chain, and gasket or seals?

I had my cams ground by Delta Camshaft of Tacoma WA.  I dont have any specific info, but they charged me $75 each + shipping so it wasnt too expensive.  I am very happy with them.  Deltacam.com

What did you have them reground to?

General Topics / m42 into an 85 318i

Hey guys. I'm trying to join the club! I have an 85 318i. I just bought a 1990 318is parts car with a good motor and tranny. Has anyone done this swap before? If so, what do I need to know. Thanks!
