Engine + Driveline / M42 overheating... Don't know why
« on: May 24, 2015, 08:35:46 PM »
Hey guys, I asked on r3v but I'll ask here too. My car has been running hot lately. The temperature gauge stays around the 3/4 mark, sometimes a little less. I've already replaced the thermostat with a new 88 degree thermostat and replaced the temp sender for the gauge cluster. I've also tracked down and fixed all leaks with a pressure tester and UV light. I don't understand what is going on or what to check next.

I almost wonder if the gauge is not working right. I am using a rebuilt gauge cluster but you guys know how e30 gauges are. I've used an infrared thermometer on the thermostat housing and radiator and it only reads around 60-70 degrees celsius.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

For Sale / FS: 4.44 LSD
« on: May 08, 2015, 08:53:01 PM »
I stopped by a junkyard today and came across a 4.44 LSD out of a 318ti. Is anyone interested? I didn't have the right tools to get it today but I can definitely go back. You'd have to make me a decent offer though because it's a 5 hour round trip from where I am. I'd hate to see it get scrapped.

I posted this on r3v but I figured you guys may be interested as well.

For Sale / 4.27 LSD (Atlanta, GA)
« on: January 27, 2014, 07:29:36 PM »
I have a 4.27 small case limited slip differential pulled from a '92 318ic. Very rare. As far as I know, this ratio only came in '91-'92 318 convertibles and the limited slips were an option. This one was pulled out of a parts car, mileage unknown. Turns freely, clean with no oil on it. $295 picked up. Shipping is extra.

Actually, it looks like they do make a conversion kit. Costs a lot more though!! http://www.amazon.com/Valeo-52161203-Solid-Flywheel-Conversion/dp/B001DHC3V8

Yeah, It was my throw out bearing, completely worn out. The valeo kit that I got doesn't come with the flywheel.... just a replacement clutch, pressure plate, TOB, etc. for the dual mass.

Engine + Driveline / Loud transmission noise!
« on: March 18, 2013, 05:28:49 PM »
Hey everyone. I'm trying to figure out whats wrong with my car. The transmission started making a rough noise with the clutch pushed in about a week ago. Throughout the week the noise has gotten louder. Now the noise is still there but with an extremely loud screeching noise. It doesn't matter if the clutch is pushed in or out but seems to be worse pushed in. However, it does seem to go away (for the most part) when actually in gear and moving down the road. As soon as I shift or push in the clutch the noise comes back.

So after all of this, I'm thinking about pulling out the transmission and replacing almost everything.
Here's the list so far:
Valeo Clutch kit : including pressure plate, clutch disc, pilot and throwout bearing, and centering tool
Rear main engine seal
Spring for Throw-out Bearing Release Lever
Input shaft seal
Pivot Pin for Clutch Fork Lever
Transmission mounts
Guibo
Exhaust gaskets

So, is there anything else I need to replace or could it be something other than the clutch/throwout bearing? I also wonder about the input shaft bearing?

(91 e30 318is) The car has 230k miles and its been in the family for 80k. I have no idea whether or not the clutch has been replaced.

Thanks,
Cody
