This is the gauge that has date/time/temp/memo etc on the heating control panel. It looks like it has a short as it starts blipping in the screen.

What is it controlling if anything

How do I get it out of the panel.

Thanks:o

Engine + Driveline / Setting up Timing chain help me
« on: March 31, 2008, 11:57:51 AM »
Timing chain issue.

Started out as an oil leak on the lower time case, that needed to be fixed. Car was running well and strong.
During the process off getting the bolt off the crank I had removed the oil pan to put a pieces of wood between the crank and housing. (Later did the starter method, way better) Anyway as I looked at the oil in take I found metal and plastic bits, this ended up with the chain guide at the top and side being in a big mess, top was missing and the side guide was broken up.

Great so I got the new top and side guide, tension rod and pulled all the parts off. Fitted the chain back on and now have the diesel effect with the engine. I did do the alignment thing with the cams, however I think that with putting in the new side guide I found it hard to get the chain on to the crank.

So my question is how do I setup the crank to TDC and get the cams adjusted to the right settings.

The chain looked straight when I first tock the covers off, now with the new guide it has a slight curve to it and this was the issue of getting the chain on the crank.

Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Engine + Driveline / Remove Crank Bolt & Busted Timing Guide
« on: March 24, 2008, 09:42:17 AM »
This is just to pass on my experience on my 318is. Car was running strong, no real engine noise fro what I found.
After cleaning the engine area I found that I had a oil leak on the lower timing case, which required the removal of the crank bolt.

After reading on this site several methods to try and get the bolt off, I went with the removing the lower oil pan and putting a piece of wood between the main crank and the housing. The bolt still remained on and would not move, however the engine did as I pulled hard on the break bar. So after talking to a old friend of my who is a garage owner he said the way to get it off was to put the breaker bar on and have the car down on the ground so that when you turn over the starter it would break the bolt free. So I went home and set the car up with the breaker bar in a long tube, made sure that the bar would hit the ground and not the car as the engine is turned. Well after two turns of the key the bolt was free. PS I had been work on this bolt for 2 weeks on and off. Ha-ha.

On to the next part, I was cleaning the oil pick up and found plastic and metal in the intake, not good.. after removing the top and lower timing chain cases and the rocker cover, I found that the top guide was completely gone, and that the guide on the right was broken and had parts missing. I pulled out bolts from the housing area along with metal and lager plastic parts from the top guide.

Engine + Driveline / I have the same issue
« on: March 10, 2008, 09:57:18 AM »
So from what I have read on this site, you should lock the flywheel and then remove the 22mm bolt on the front of the crank.

Is this true for an engine still in the car?

Is it a left hand or right hand thread?

Thanks for the help
