Engine + Driveline / Oil Pressure Relief Valve DIY
« on: April 02, 2014, 08:04:28 PM »
I'm 99% sure mine is frozen. Does anyone have a DIY link? I searched and haven't found anything on it. If anyone is in the Bay Area I'm willing to pay you to help or do this for me.

I'm fairly certain I have my wires in the right order. The wires I have I believe are stock and are numbered. If I pull the oil filter housing, I should get a new gasket and o-ring, right? Is there anything else it may be? I assembled everything outside the car, so I'd say that decreases the likelihood I may have messed something up, but at the same time this is my first time replacing an engine. Thanks for the offer to help me out. I live in California (San Jose) so if anyone wants to come over for pizza/beer/money....

Does this sound like anything to do with the coils/wires/plugs? If it was something like that it'd be easy, but I kinda doubt it.

Engine + Driveline / E30 M42 low oil pressure, runs VERY loud/rough
« on: March 21, 2014, 09:27:23 AM »
So I overheated my old engine and replaced it with a newer m42. I did an m20 flywheel/clutch swap, most gaskets (upper/lower oil pan, upper/lower intake, oil filter housing, valve cover) except the head and profile. I checked all the upper pan bolts and they're good and tight. I replaced the timing chain tensioner because the timing chain had just started to make noise (got the engine from a good friend). Cam gears look brand new. Didn't touch the guides.

So here's my problem. I start it up and it idles fine but I've run it for less than a minute total because it's loud as hell and I don't want to risk damaging anything in this engine that I've put so much work into. I hope the link below works, it's loud as fuck. My oil pressure light comes on and stays on. My guess is that the chain tensioner isn't getting oil so it isn't adequately tensioning the chain. A couple of the plug wires (3&4) weren't fully connected but that made no difference once I fixed it. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / m42 turbo information

Honestly a fully stock engine should make your goals. Maybe a thicker hg. But with decent tuning and 10-12 psi you're already seeing well over 200hp

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Interest in Bolt on Turbo kit?

So does this mean that the manifold will limit the boost pressure and maximum power? I'd be interested in Jake's comments on it.

I'm a bit confused. So you're on fully stock internals (basically)? How thick is your HG? How much boost are you running?

It's been at a bunch of different heights. It's raised from my sig pic, which was about the lowest it ever was. Maybe 2.5" clearance there on the oil pan and under two on parts of the exhaust. Right now it's about where it was at I'm the first pic, and I'm putting new wheels on soon so it may go slightly lower to finalize the ride height.

Roads are generally okay here. I've heard that San Jose has some of the worst highways in the country due to lack of maintenance, but they've never seen snow or salt so I'm sure that helps. I'm on ground controls with custom rates so it can handle being pretty low without too much risk, IMO.

Welcome to the 'club!  Your car looks awesome - do you always keep it so clean?  What color is that?

I always had a weak spot for the 'verts, they're great cars.  Keep us updated!  You've really slammed that car - are you running a skid plate?

Thanks! It's actually always dirty haha. I wash/detail cars for extra money on the side, and it really uses up all of my energy for cleaning cars.

I'm not running a skid plate, because I think my oil pan is pretty high right now. I haven't measured it at my current height, but I think I have over 3" of clearance, so I'm not too worried. I've been running it at around 3" or less clearance for a year now with no issues.

Hey guys! I'm Vivek from Los Gatos, CA. I've been on r3vlimited for a while now, and I've just lurked on this board. I have an e30 convertible (m42 of course) that I plan to boost around this summer. My goal is around 200whp at 10-12 psi, but I'm still working all of that stuff out.

Just because you're super local, how's the head on it? If it's in good condition I have either cash or an m50tu short block to trade.

I'm posting this ad now because the kind of stuff that I'm looking for can be hard to come by. Around summertime this year, I'd like to turbo my car (1992 e30 318i convertible). I'm looking for someone with a turbo setup that is considering taking theirs off in a few months. I'd really like everything: turbo, mani, waste gate/bov, all piping, IC, engine management, injectors, and anything else I'm forgetting. I'd like at least a downpipe, but a full exhaust isn't completely necessary (although if you have one, by all means, I want it). I'd really like to buy a full setup that someone has proven on their car, so it's all plug and play for me.

As far as pricing goes, show me what you have. I'm really not looking to spend over 2k unless you're getting rid of a built/rebuilt engine with it. I've seen what I'm looking for sell for under a thousand bucks, although I understand that 1k may be too low depending on what parts you have. I'd prefer to have someone in California so I don't have to deal with shipping. I'm willing to drive to Socal and I have a car big enough for a full exhaust.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'm a stand up guy and we can work out a deposit so you know that I'm serious.
