Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / M47 crankshaft to M42
« on: October 11, 2012, 07:17:47 AM »
I have built a 2L M42 with the M47 crank from a 320d. From what I've seen on a pic of the Rover M47 crank the nose is much shorter and requires a adapter to be able to use it. Thus the crank from a BMW is preffered. That one requires a second woodruff key in the nose of the crank and the nose is a couple of 1/10 mm larger. So either make the nose smaller in a lathe or make the cam sprocket + adapter for the vibration damper larger.

Then you must of course find a suitable combination of pistons and rods if not custom ordered.

There's a cheap, or should I say less expensive ;)  way to raise the CR a bit to around 11:1. Try to find a set of used M52B28 pistons (328,528 etc..) and shave about 0.2-0.3 mm of the piston top to get the same compression height as the standard M42. I don't remeber the exact dimension since it was about 7 years ago I did this unfortunately. You also need to mill new valve pockets. That piston is also lighter with a different design on the piston skirt.

A bit late information but now you have some time to source the parts before next overhaul. :)

Lycka till i rallyskogen ;)

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / E30 brake swap

I'm probably using the same rear disc as you, ventilated E46, 294 mm diameter. Can't remember exactly which model it was from since it was a couple of years ago I did the upgrade, but I believe it was from a 328.
Just drilled a new bolt pattern and lathed off the old hub guide from my old discs and used it as a spacer since the 5-lug discs has a bigger hub pilot hole.

It's a great setup, it's exactly what I'm using for my 318 is turbo track toy. Only I kept the 4-lug since I have a lot of rims already...

15" BBS BMW rims will fit over the rear brakes but in the front I'm running 312 mm discs and there they don't...:o

Edit: My calipers are from the Boxster S/ 911 C2. Might not be exactly the same setup then..

Skip the sintered clutch disc and buy a Sachs '618 pressure plate instead and use a standard 325 organic clutch disc. Will hold much better and also better driveability. Maybe a bit more pricey but you won't regret it in the long run.
That's the setup I use on my 318is turbo, works great.

Dynoed the is turbo yesterday, 280hp :) I wanted more ouf of it but we had some problems with the MS at higer rpms, trigger errors i think so ill get back to that.
But i works really great below 6000rpm or so! Pretty fun :)

Nice with more is turbo´s in Sweden =) How much boost are running? whp or crank hp?

Also, I'm thinking a guy's not going to get much boost before knock while turbocharging an engine with a 10:1 CR. Planning on a piston swap?

With E85 fuel it's fully possible :)

Once again, NO! He is a friend of mine and I know what I'm talking about. That curve is recalculated to flywheel hp. Since you are from norway you should be able to understand swedish pretty well, what does Bmwandreas say in the top post on page 9 in his thread?

Engine + Driveline / Bottom end rebuild. Break-in procedure?
« on: February 11, 2010, 09:13:32 AM »
I have tried this method: http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
and I have also tried just a early oil change and then just running it like usual. I can't tell if one engine is running better than the other. Would be interesting to dyno two identical engines (ring gap, bearing play etc etc) and see if there's a measurable difference in that case depending only on break in method.

IMHO: If you are building a standard or even slightly tuned engine, you really can't fail breaking it in. Just don't forget to change oil early ;)

And does anyone know if that build link is Swedish or Austrian? I'd like to run it through a translator.

If you are talking about the thread I linked, it's Swedish.

strypt: Does your friend use 88mm Crank from Diesel?
If he got issues with the trigger wheel, why doesn't he convert to M42 trigger wheel?

No he uses the M44 83.5 mm crank to get lower piston acceleration and less torsional vibrations.
The problem is that the M44 trigger wheel is bolted onto the "throw" (don't know the english word sorry) of the crank at the 4th cylinder. Completely different from M42. Removing it will require adding weights to the crank to be able to balance it.

Also beware of the trigger wheel bolted to the M44 crankshaft. It has exploded twice on my friends racecar with 8k+ rpm. (Fully built M42/M44 combo, almost 250 bhp N/A)
Edit: The trigger wheel sits inside the engine, not in the front like M42. It is bolted to the crank thou, but apperently hard to balance it without it. Maybe possible if you add weights.

I'm not using one ;) but I'll make one when I put my new 2.0L engine together.
