Engine + Driveline / Engine Bearing color codes??
« on: May 30, 2011, 09:37:08 AM »
Can anybody tell me what the difference is in the color codes i.e. red and blue for the rod bearings and yellow, white, and green for main bearings are?? On realoem.com it's showing different colors for mains and rods for std. sizes etc. I understand there is a difference between early and late models but this isn't listed for a build date of 8/1990.

Wanting to complete a project. Thrust bearing surface on mine is all messed up. Would be willing to part with some of the parts from my parts car in trade.

Engine + Driveline / Did we ever figure out the "Hot Start Problem"

Has anyone thought of taking a look at the fuel pressure regulator. Could be that it's stuck wide open.

Engine + Driveline / Power mods for the M42
« on: May 07, 2011, 08:26:56 AM »
I work in a parts store with a machine shop on site. Last fall I purchased a second 318is with a blown motor. After talking to MM and a few other sources I have decided to build an 11.5:1 compression motor, do a little port work on the cyl. head, and install the Miller Motorsports warchip. Figuring this should get the motor to somewhere around 190hp.

Engine + Driveline / I need some Serious $#%@#$in Help seriously

Have you checked over the whole mess of emission hoses to see if any have split, have a hole in them, or are simply disconnected? Just my 2 cents.

Suspension / Rear camber correction
« on: February 13, 2011, 11:07:07 AM »
Came across these last night:

http://www.akgmotorsport.com/catalog/catalog.php?page=6&category=e30%20Suspension%2FBushings

item# sf3089. Subframe bushings that will raise the subframe 9mm to correct for camber. Has anyone had any experience with this part. Gathering info for my rear suspension setup. Thanks.

Suspension / 318is steering crackling noise
« on: February 13, 2011, 10:53:05 AM »
Is the noise more pronounced at low speed and then goes away as speed increases? Does it sound like it's coming from one side more than the other? Open the hood and stand outside the car with the engine running and have someone turn the wheel, put your hands on the strut towers and if you feel a popping or roughness in them it's the upper strut bearings.

Engine + Driveline / What year M42's drop into a '91 318i?
« on: January 01, 2011, 10:02:32 AM »
Recently picked up a really nice 318is here in Kansas, no rust, paint needed a good wheel job, and almost perfect interior. Car had sat for 3 yrs. Problem was with the engine (dropped compression on number 3 cylinder). Bought it for $300. The good news is that I had another good albeit but very tired chassis and engine as a donor car. Two weeks later (work got in the way a little), and I have a very nice example to drive. One thing to look out for with engine swaps on the 318 is the pilot bearing. BMW used a smaller diameter "nose" on the input shaft if the build date was before 9/1990. Other than that it was a drop in replacement form original car to new car.

Engine + Driveline / Cold start lifter tick - info request
« on: December 18, 2007, 11:25:33 PM »
I've had a lifter tick on startup for the past five years. I asked a BMW master tech about it and he said to just let it tick. I have since switched over to a conventional 10w-40 and about one hundred miles before an oil change I top off the crankcase with Dexron-Mercon 3. While this is an old trick it still works. One word of caution however, since trans. fluid has a high amount of detergents it is wise not to let the revs get out of hand as this could cause the oil to foam.
