Electrical / Re: Temp Gauge HELL
« on: October 09, 2024, 11:08:44 PM »
According to the 318is ETM, C191 is located rear of the LH top corner of the engine. Reference fig 1, 7000-1. 8500-10 shows a picture of the connector pinning.

Is it the one pictured? I thought that was the C101? Or is that in fact the C191 and the C101 is the OBD port?

It's in that area according to what I can tell in the manual picture.

You can download the manual from the FAQ/Reference, M42 Reference section. It's pinned 5th thread down from the top.

I honestly don't know why this forum hasn't followed suite and faded off into the great unknown like many in the past. It was probably the best and most mature on the internet in its day. Anyway...

First thing everyone checks is to make sure the the instrument panel nut to the gauge is tight. You've tried three different IPs, so that's out of the equation.

Make sure you're connectors aren't crossed and installed correctly (refer to attachment).

Is your engine ground strap to frame in good condition?

Do a continuity check on the wire from the sensor to the gauge.

Open another tab and type in "temp gauge and m42club.com" for other ideas and suggestions.

Good luck and don't give up!

Search for rebuild kit 32411135880.

The original pumps look to be discontinued.

Engine + Driveline / Re: M42 whining noise

I can't pick up the whining noise you're referring to. Honestly, the engine sounds pretty good to me. If the guides are good and the tensioner has been replaced, I presume you've checked the timing chain and sprockets for wear.

According to BMWfans, #19 looks to be what you've posted a picture of. If you have the VIN of the donor motor, I'd put that into RealOEM or BMW fans to compare to.

I have several steering columns, but not sure what you mean by "the part that is on the side".

142 -156 PSI with no more than a 7 PSI differential between cylinders. Readings are done on a warm engine according to the manual, and crank each cylinder until the compression quits rising. You can always put a bit of motor oil down the spark plug hole and check again. If compression rises, the rings are worn. A leakdown test can differentiate leakage caused by worn rings or valves.

I have the 1989 repair manual on microfiche downloaded to my computer. I looked up the information, but I'm not seeing any differentiation between small, medium, and large diffs.

Shoot me a PM and I'll share what I have.

I parked my daily driving E30 after signs of blowing a head gasket and just recently got the itch to get it back on the road. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the work you put into this and how handy it is! I have a "crank, no start" situation and this will help tremendously!

Thank you!

I'm amazed at what you can do and your knowledge of all this (to me) voo doo.

I haven't been buying E30 parts for quite a while, but for my wife's X3 and my M3 I usually order from Morristown BMW. http://www.bmw-oem-parts.com/

Their prices for genuine BMW parts are usually the best I've found, but they don't sell aftermarket. Otherwise, I check Rockauto, ECS, and Pelican parts in that order. FCP is another and they warranty their parts for life...so I'm told.
