Engine + Driveline / Ticking Possibly in the Valve Train
« on: March 06, 2008, 12:42:30 PM »

I am thinking that I may not be able to clearly hear the noise through the valve cover because of the provided insulation from the valve cover gasket, does that seem reasonable to anyone else?

I think the noise would tranfer through the cover bolts.

General Topics / Looking For A Quiet Fuel Pump
« on: October 19, 2007, 01:22:44 PM »
Mine is making a tiny wine... nothing much. it is constant which I heard is normal.

I just found out that the fuel pump is always on when the engine is running... I thought something was stuck on ;-)

Most newer cars are not like that are they?

Engine + Driveline / Tranny lube
« on: October 19, 2007, 10:24:48 AM »
I just check the diff and tranny.  Both where full and the oil looked new.  Now im not sure what kind they used but im leaving it for now.

I will get the redline when I pay my bills first

I guess i need to get under there and see if I have a green or red or no sticker.
It is a 17mm plug though.

Or can I just use some ATF?  I have 4 quarts of the crap on my shelf taking up space.

This will only be used for a few weeks.  And since I want to change to lube again after oonly a couple hundred miles to do a flush, I dont need anything fancy.

Yes I will use red line, But I have to order it and I need to drive the car now.  Plus I have like no cash right now, I spent it all on the front end.

I dont want to drive it without changing the oil cause im unsure of it condition.

All I want to know is if its ok to use this gear oil instead for a few weeks without hurting the tranny.

Thanks for your replies.

I just bought this car and Im not sure how long or how dirty the oil in the tranny of my car has been in there being the fuel filter I replaced on the car was the original dated 6/19/91 (so how knows how long its been since a tranny change).

So I just want to put a lube in and it will be replaced in about 100 miles or so.  I hate to buy more oil so I fond these sitting in my garage.  I think they would be fine to the tranny.  I know they are not gl-5 so Im good there.  But I could not find if they where gl-4 or not.

If they're good enough for the motorcycle tranny, think they'll work in the 318 tranny?  Im not racing or anything.  I drive more like granny.

same oils, diff package.

Suspension / Stock camber
« on: October 18, 2007, 10:54:35 PM »
I get a better pic.  One that show both at the same time.  I think this may be normal as ive seen it on other bmw's

The front end I just replaced, arms, struts, tower bearings, lolly pop bushings.

Suspension / Stock camber
« on: October 18, 2007, 12:37:03 AM »
Look at these pics.. does this camber look ok?  The last tires on the vehicle where worn bad on the inside (only the fronts).  I replaced all the suspension and put in bilstein HD struts and It looks like the camber is still negative.  If this is not normal then my strut towers must be bent... I guess I could measure them.  But if that was the case I'd see bad fit and the body work ( I think)

General Topics / Tire wear after H&R Sport/Bilstein Sports
« on: October 17, 2007, 11:33:43 PM »
I just bought my car and the old tires had the blets showing but the wear was only on the inside of the tires (fronts Only)  The car had negative camber.  more than I see on most stock cars.  most cars to me its hard to tell the camber in the front end.  we'll my bmw after replacing ALL front end suspension parts still has about the same camber.  Im using bilsiten heavy duty.  Im not sure what the last struts where..

Do these cars come factory with more than usual negative camber?

The only thing left for me to believe (unless this is normal) is that my strut towers are bent in-ward:eek:

Engine + Driveline / output shaft rebuild? possible
« on: October 16, 2007, 01:53:56 PM »
both my output shaft outer boots are cracked and the inners are on the way out.  Im wondering if its possible to rebuild them.  These bitches cost like $400 a piece

I checked them and there is no play so maybe I dont need a rebuild but maybe clean them out and repack them.  then put new boots on.

anyone do this yet?

Belstein says nothing about it in the directions... They also say refer to diagram but there is no diagram in the instructions...
