Looks good. Liking the S14 :D

But does he get to stay without an M42? :p

when funds allow I would really like to upgrade to this new turbo that just came out. Its really an awesome compressor

What are those wheels on your car by the way?

Thanks deekay. I still haven't had a chance to have a proper play with that calculator but it looks very useful.

Like clutchkick said, I've been looking at Garrett T28 turbo's off SR20DET engines and the like. It looks like this one has an AR of 60.

Engine + Driveline / Starting problems - M42 won't start
« on: May 24, 2010, 07:36:37 AM »
OK it was my own stupid fault. I did have the firing order wrong. It's because I've gone to coil-on-plug and got confused with the wiring loom.

Engine + Driveline / Starting problems - M42 won't start
« on: May 23, 2010, 05:41:46 PM »
I installed an M42 in my car yesterday, and got it all set up to run today. However, I cannot get it to start. The engine has been sitting for about 2 years. It sounds like it fires on all cylinders once, then just pops and splutters. This happens every time I turn the key, each cylinder seems to fire once, then nothing.

The fuel pump is working and I have pressure. The firing order is correct. Everthing seems to be connected correctly.

Does anyone have any clue what's going on?

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / 316 fuel pump wiring
« on: May 06, 2010, 06:17:31 PM »
Hi guys. I'm nearly ready to put the engine in my track car, but I need to sort out the fuel pump. The car is a 316 (carb). I've installed the 318is fuel pump and added a return fuel line.

What do I need to do to get the pump running? Is there any redundant wiring in the 316 I can use? Or should I just take a new switched live from the fusebox to the fuel pump?

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Stock Header Turbo Build
« on: April 08, 2010, 03:01:04 PM »
Thats brilliant, I love it! I assume that you are just running the stock ecu?

Also did you investigate mounting the turbo closer to the manifold? It looks like it could be difficult with the angle of the manifold flange.

Is the metal beam across the bay just to support the turbo and pipework?

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Supercharging questions
« on: March 04, 2010, 04:50:04 AM »
Thanks Chris.

I've just been having a read through some of your threads. Have you run the engine at 300bhp yet?

I think getting to that figure from an Eaton SC may be pushing it a bit. I'd definitely consider turbocharging as an alternative due to it being easier to install in the first place and easier to upgrade in the future.

Chris.

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Supercharging questions
« on: March 01, 2010, 04:08:24 AM »
Originally I wanted to build a 2.0 stroker M42, but I had to pull back my budget a bit. I started thinking turbo, but now I’m leaning towards a supercharger for a more progressive power delivery, more like an N/A tune.

I see from here that a few people (and downing Atlanta) have done the Eaton M45 and M62 conversions. I've read through both of Appletrees builds with great interest and respect.

At the moment I thinking about an intercooled M62 setup running on megasquirt with completely stock engine and compression ratio.

Could I run the M62 to its rpm limit on a stock engine?

What sort of torque and bhp figures could I expect from this setup?

How much could be gained from lowering the compression ratio of the motor? Either head gasket and bolts or stretching my budget some more, pistons?

There are a few different figures floating around but some people reckon the M42 is capable of 300bhp boosted in stock form ?? That sounds quite optimistic without at least lowering the compression ratio?

Suspension / How do you Remove Strut Cartgidge?
« on: August 18, 2008, 04:17:09 PM »
I dont have a pipe wrench, but what I've done a couple of times in the past is to use a vice. After you've removed the spring, put the strut upside down in the vice, usung the vice to clamp the threaded cap. Clamp it nice and tight but be careful not to bend the cap. Moving to the bottom of the strut (which should be sticking up), find some extension bars or other similar tools that you can stick in the holes that the track rod end and control arms fix to, then use a big bar stuck between them to turn the whole strut and undo the cap. It works really well but its hard to explain :p

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Cheapest and easiest way to 200bhp??

Cheapest way to 200bhp would be M50/M52, but we'll leave that 6pot nonsense to the fascists on the other forums...

Theres a very good reason I didnt ask this question on the 'other' forum. You know the one I mean, Grindculture :p

Well, I might still stroke it to 2.0 litres, but its all the head work that was starting to run up the cost and time.

Would an Eaton M45 be too small for a 2 litre engine or would I be better off with something a bit bigger?

I might still stick with the original plan, but I want to look at my options properly first. I'm not too keen on the power delivery characteristics of a turbocharged engine, but from what I've heard, supercharging is more similar to N/A. Would that be a correct assumption?

Suspension / rack and pinion
« on: August 13, 2008, 07:39:32 AM »
As far as I know, there are 3 different racks; manual, power and a quicker ratio one on the Euro M3 (maybe the US M3 too, not sure). So you can take one of any normal E30, the 318is mostly have power racks I think.

I have a power rack for sale, but I'm in the UK :(

If you can, you should think about fitting an E36 or Z3 rack though. They are a very good upgrade.

Define successful and reliable, then we can talk. Have they run 100k miles on it yet?

Successful as in they get a decent power hike.
Reliable as in they still use the car as their daily driver with not many problems.

Car manufacturers still build cars that last a lot less than 100k miles and still call them 'reliable'.

What I mean is that I want an engine thats not going to need a rebuild every 10k ;)

Due to other commitments, I dont have the time I used to to spend on the car. Although I am slowly managing to build up the suspension and brakes, etc, the engine is one thing I am struggling to find the time and money to get going with.

The plan was to build a 2.0 stroker, ITB's, cams, lightened valvetrain, etc, but I'm now wondering if it wouldn't be quicker and cheaper to fab an Eaton M45 SC setup? My goal was for 200bhp NA, but there are a couple of folks around with M45 blowers getting nearly 200bhp successfully and reliably.

I'm looking for opinions. Stick with the original plan or stick a blower on it?
