Engine + Driveline / 318is will not start
« on: December 04, 2012, 04:19:32 PM »
Even though there is 12V at the front of the car, doesn't mean that it is getting the current it needs to crank over the engine.

I suspect that the battery cable might be compromised between your battery and the front of the car.  Do you have a DMM to look at the voltage in the front when you try to crank the starter?  If it is in deed the battery cable, the voltage might dip far enough where the starter is only clicking and not turning...

Engine + Driveline / Timing Case / Oil Pump

OP, there is no way to fix that timing case. I have actually had both of those failures hit me over the years. The blown oil pump is most likely due to the timing chain whipping around when the sprocket broke off and pieces of roller bearing fell into the oil pan. The useless screen on the inlet won't stop them from getting into the pump. Did you find all sorts of debris in the oil pan? Is there a small hole punched in the inlet screen? Did the pump blow up when you were red-lining the engine?

The broken oil pump case was actually a used one that I bought to replace mine.  My timing case took a dive with the idler sprocket mount broken off...  Likely, I was able to find another M42 case with the oil pump in a single piece (well 2 pieces to be exact).  Just got the case and timing components back in- Now I just need to find time to put everything else back together... Will let you all know how it goes!

So colin86325, you don't think I should try to fix the 1 that I bought?  It's probably pretty hard to score a timing case, let alone the later one where it is replaced with a rail instead of a sprocket...

It's frustrating!!!

Engine + Driveline / Timing Case / Oil Pump

Well actually this is a case that I picked up, I have the unfortunate idler sprocket snaped situation... Luckily, the timing chain did not skipped a notch!  So the oil pump and the crank shaft is fine on my original timing case.  I just don't know if I should repair the oil pump section of the case that I picked up.

Here is what happened to my case:

So... the Oil pump decided to take a "break" and take the timing case with it

Do you guys think I can repair the case? just don't know enough about the operation of the oil pump / rotary assembly- i.e. pressure apply to the case when it is turning...

Thanks!

Engine management / ICV Question
« on: October 23, 2007, 09:04:50 PM »
It's been a few more days after I cleaned out the ICV.  I notice the idle still bounces erratically.  Do anyone have an extra working ICV that I can buy from?

Engine management / ICV Question
« on: October 19, 2007, 11:39:23 PM »
I accidently placed this over in sales Forum, but here it is:
Hi all, I have been enjoying my m42 for over 3 years now!  Until a month ago, my baby suddenly quit on me.  After a couple weeks of diagnostic, I find out the crank sensor went to hell with over 1.5M ohm read on my DMM!  Thanks to REDHEAD and M42Club, I was able to get another sensor and she is back to life.
Although my baby is running again, she starts to bounce her idle from time to time, cold or warm; mostly from 1500 to 2K.  As I was cleaning out my ICV, I notice the gate within the valve have a gap and kind of chipped up.  I wonder if that could have created a vacuum leak through the valve.  Here is a picture of the gate itself!

Like I said, I don't know if that gap suppose to be there, please advise-
Thanks guys...
