Alright friends, have decided to move on from the E30 world. I'm putting my daily driver up for sale. $1,600.

1991 318i. Diamondschwartz. 5-speed. Keyless entry. About 225k miles. ODO stopped. Timing chain & guides done at 200k. Typical E30 issues. Not the nicest E30 in the world, but would serve excellent as a cheap daily driver or something to tinker with.

The Good:

Runs excellent. Always starts immediately. Bulletproof engine. No overheating. Paint shines nicely. Clutch is perfect. New front brake rotors and new pads all around. New front wheel bearings. Performance ignition wires. All vacuum lines replaced (kept it stock). Never ever left me stranded. Idles steadily between 600-800 RPM.

The Bad:

Developed a rust bubble on rear driver’s door, I got rid of it and put primer in its place. Rear bumper damaged in corner. Power steering not functional (pump should still be good, belt failed). Some small tears in headliner. Carpet has some stains from previous owner. A/C works, but probably needs a recharge. Suspension needs attention. More than driveable, but it’s not as tight as an E30 should be. I’d give the body a 4/10 due to a messed up front valence and missing fog light (see pictures). Paint has also cracked off mirrors. Cracked dash (typical, car spent most of its life in Texas).

Like I said, not the best E30 you’ll see. But it still looks nice and runs perfectly. Contact me for additional information.

Engine + Driveline / Power drop (loss) around 2-3k RPM
« on: May 24, 2010, 08:36:02 AM »
Been noticing more of an erratic idle again. I've replaced every single vacuum line in the car (including stuff under the intake) and then it ran great for several months. Now it seems to idle a little crazier again and am also losing power between 2-3k RPM when I'm driving. When I get on the throttle it goes away, but when I'm just holding speed it's there. Feels like a misfire but a bit more gentle. Plugs look OK.

The most I've put in is about 12.9 gallons, I've never completely emptied the tank.

General Topics / The mess under the intake
« on: May 04, 2009, 02:23:14 PM »
Just did this all Friday afternoon. Slow but certain success. The car idles perfect. It actually starts when hot with the AC on now! And I might actually pass emissions this year by more than just one number.

Wasn't too bad. I kept the coolant running through the throttle body and replaced all lines with as OEM as I could get. I made one hose between the throttle body and the cooling plate, but that was all. The one kicker was the 4-port one to the front of the car has changed since it was in my car. It is now in three pieces where mine was just one vacuum line to the throttle body. I learned this upon getting home and digging into the intake. This prompted a trip to the hardware store to fashion my own replacements. They're working great!

Thanks for all the diagrams, couldn't have done it without.

Engine + Driveline / Running 87 octane
« on: September 22, 2008, 08:35:27 AM »
I've been avoiding putting anything less than 91 octane in the car, however the southeast is experiencing a huge fuel shortage and all I can find is 87.

I drive about 50 miles on the interstate to work and back every day, am just wondering how to avoid any problems if I'm running 87 octane.

Engine + Driveline / Motor Mounts - rockauto.com
« on: July 28, 2008, 09:28:00 AM »
Have noticed some motor mounts on rockauto.com that are priced far below anything else I've seen. So of course that makes me suspicious.

ÜRO PARTS Part # 11811141377 - $21.79

Wondering if this is the right part and if anyone is using these.

Engine + Driveline / Where Can I find Spark Plug Boots?

Quick and dirty solution.

http://m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5309&highlight=cheap+ignition

Use Volvo wires from circa 1995 850 5-cylinder. They're much shorter and don't look pretty, but it saves a few bucks.

Engine + Driveline / vacuum hose diameter

do the "M42 hose delete"....  then you won't have to worry about replacing many of them, or the potential failure of them (if they have not failed already).  There are many threads on this site that show exactly how to do the hose delete and which hoses can be completely removed - it's worth it, MANY of us have deleted the "spaghetti" under the intake.

:)

yeah, that is the plan. where would I get the hoses to do the deletion?

Anyone know the diameter of the various vacuum hoses off hand? I think they're all the same. But I could be mistaken.

General Topics / paint question - diamondschwartz
« on: April 04, 2008, 02:48:48 PM »
My knowledge in the world of paint is severely lacking. Am replacing the front valence/airdam and spoiler. Probably finding a used one (mine is bent, bought the car that way). Was wondering if you guys had any luck either finding a shop that can match well or if there is a simpler way.

Also want to remove the outdated pinstripe.

General Topics / M42 o2 Sensor - Where to buy?
« on: February 25, 2008, 03:42:13 PM »
Installed the new o2 sensor. Spliced the wires and it works perfectly. My old one came off fairly easily, and it was pretty black around the base of the sensor but was white on the top. The car is clearly running better, however I don't think my mileage is back. After 65 miles the gauge is just under the 3/4 full mark. Is that normal? Should I run it through another emissions check to see if the hydrocarbons came down? Is there a chance I have an ECU issue?

Please post wiring diagrams and where I can find a standard 4-wire 02 sensor.
