For Sale / MN: 92 E30 318ic for sale
« on: June 23, 2013, 01:09:26 AM »
Here is the link for photos and a description. The description is old but the car is pretty much exactly as described and photographed.

http://www.m42club.com/forum/index.php?topic=6053.msg52693#msg52693

I had the car up for sale last year, but got cold feet and pulled it off because I just like the car so much.  However, I bought a Porsche on a whim this spring which brings me to 6 cars. The wife says something must go. Since the Porsche is also a convertible it pretty much duplicates the function of the 318ic so it is regrettably up for sale again. This time for good.

I have owned the car 10 years. It has three current needs. Tires getting thin, windshield has a couple of rock chips and is, surprisingly, the original so heavily pitted, Small rust spot on the rear valance where I believe a previous owner backed into something, dinged it, and it started to rust. Easy fix. Otherwise the car is rust free. I have never driven it in the winter. Previously it was a Missouri and Georgia car. I believe I am the third owner.

Mechanically the car is in great shape. Cosmetics - its a driver not a show car. It has its share of rock chips and door dings.  It has 146,000 mile on it. All the original BMW vin stickers are in place on the fenders, hood, trunk, etc.

I just realized I didn't take a photo with the top up. I replaced the top a couple of years ago so its in great shape. Its a tan vinyl top that matches the interior rather than the original black. I'll try to take and post a photo with the top up. I think it gives the car a unique and classy look.

PM me with questions. I'd be happy to send more photos or talk on the phone if you send me your email or phone number.

I really want $3,500. I think all the M suspension componentry is probably worth nearly that. If you want to haggle the asking price is $3,995. :)

Suspension / Stock lowering?
« on: October 21, 2011, 10:37:16 PM »
Sorry for the late bump but...

Pull out the rubber spring pads. Put in some plastic sheeting to seperate the spring from strut.  In the back I cut the one with the bump stop so I could retain the bump stop.

Will lower the car 1/2 - 3/4 an inch or so.

Member Profiles / 91 laguna green 318i cabrio

Looks great. Give us some more details.

I've got a 92 Laguna green vert. (http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6053)  Love your wheels. Gold works well and sets it apart.  I've got e30 M3 weaves on mine, but am going to switch to either DS2s or Contours this summer. Can't decide which. I am leaning towards the contours with polished lips and darker silver centers.

If you want a quickie way to get a little extra drop, and haven't done it already, pull out the rubber spring pads and replace them with a thin piece of plastic sheeting. Something like 3-5 mills - not hefty garbage bag thin.

Exterior / Was there ever a dark green 318is color?
« on: October 17, 2010, 11:28:21 PM »
Dark green was very popular on the e36s. I don't think there was a difference in color choices between the 325 and 318.

On the e30 I think only the 92 and 93 318i convertibles came in green. The coupe and sedan had ceased production by then.

In photos it can often look very dark or very light depending on the lighting situation.

General Topics / removing cat 91 e30 318is
« on: April 25, 2010, 04:42:39 PM »
Unless your cat is damaged there is not much performance benefit to removing it. A modern cat isn't all that restrictive and a performance cat will flow as well as a test pipe.  Grassroots motorsports found about 1 hp on a miata between the stock cat and test pipe. UUC motorworks found about 5hp on a civic, but only 1hp difference between the test pipe and aftermarket cat. So it will likely vary depending on the quality of the oem cat. I am guessing BMW cats are pretty good.

I liked UUC's take on the final results: "With a difference of only 1hp between a straight pipe and a 49-state LEGAL cat, it seems foolish to flaunt the law and pollute the air that we all breathe. Hell, if you are only looking for those kinds of gains, just loose 10 pounds -that alone will make your car faster than adding 1 measly HP."

Also modern computerized/fuel injected cars need 0 backpressure. In fact backpressure hurts performance. The old backpressure/torque/HP tuning theories apply to carbureted engines.

Suspension / Does anyone have e30 m3 springs with Billy HDs?
« on: April 25, 2010, 03:57:59 PM »
I get no noise from removing the spring pads.  I did put a thin sheet of plastic in as a replacement. I actually used a chunk of a Softner Salt bag.

The rear does look lower in the photos, but I've never noticed that in person.  Maybe because my driveway slopes toward the street, it caused that illusion in the photos.

You could leave the bottom spacer in the rear. It would make it easier. When i pulled mine, I cut up the bottom rear spacers so I could put the bump stop back in as it also centers the spring in the perch.

I've got stock M3 springs, bilstein sports and 15" wheels on my cabbie. Love it as a daily driver. Aggressive, but not too harsh. Good height. About perfect for my needs.

I also removed the spring pads so its a little lower than if you left them in.

Exterior / Yay or nay... a cosmetic idea...
« on: April 11, 2010, 10:50:46 PM »
If you like it - go for it.

I'm not sure it would be that big a deal for the M to be smaller than the 42. Which it will be if you use numbers from the trunk.  The bigger trick will be extending the little M3 plaque to fit the numbers. The chrome M and 3 are glued on, but the M-stripes are painted directly on the plate.  If you are concerned about the letters and numbers matching up you could try to find the front plate for a very early 524td. Bigger plaque and the numbers should be pretty close in size to the M. I assume they are glued on like the M3 badge. I've never seen one of those early model plaques up close.

In the interest of full disclosure I should note that I've got just the tricolor stripes from the M3 badge on the front of my 318is - in reference to the complete M3 suspension it rides on. The M and 3 were knocked off in the fairly violent accident that made the suspension available for a transplant.

Suspension / Post your suspension setup
« on: April 09, 2010, 10:55:20 PM »
Hey, I've got the same suspension as John W.

Stock M3 springs, Bilstein Sports, Offset CABs and e46 rear mounts. I removed the spring pads and, like BMWMAN, went with all rubber bushings. Huge ride quality improvement and no noticable loss of handling on the street. Actually may be better. The poly/delrin often lost traction on the crappy street surfaces. Needless to say I love it. If I was autocrossing the stiffer springs and bushings would be worthwhile, but on the street, not so much.

General Topics / e30 318is into a baby M3. Is it possible?
« on: March 31, 2010, 10:07:47 PM »
I put the complete M3 suspension/brakes in my convertible.

Straight bolt in swap.  No tire fender clearance issues at all.

Actually early M3s came with the steel control arms. They are much better suited to daily driving and 1/10th the cost of the aluminium ones.

If you do the swap use a brake master from an early 750. It's slightly larger and gives great pedal feel. Look up the swap online because you need a specific part number.

I just swapped the entire rear trailing arms rather than mess with pulling and swapping the hubs. Really you should replace the bushings anyways.

If you can't find a complete M3 suspension you could do the 5 lug swap (although the value of it on a road car seems questionable to me), get aftermarket endlinks for an M3 and use your stock swaybar (20mm vs M3 19mm). Have a shop weld on the necessary tabs on the struts. Springs are easier to come by (not the same as the 318is) And the offset control arm bushings are readily available.  That would give you essentially an M3 suspension minus the brakes. Can you get bigger e36 brakes with the front suspension? I don't know much about the 5 lug swap.

Off-topic discussion / What was your first car?
« on: March 21, 2010, 01:01:27 PM »
First car that was mine - 1965 Chevelle SS - believe it or not, given to me by my great grandmother when she lost her license. She drove kick ass cars.

First car i bought myself - 1986 Merkur XR4ti. Went to the LM dealer to look at a used 1984 318i. This was in late 1987 when they knew they were dumping the Merkur brand. They sold me the dealer demo XR4ti with 8,000 miles on it for $9,000. Sticker was $20,000 a year earlier. Fun car, about as reliable as a Jaguar. Something was always breaking.

Suspension / E30 Vert fun factor just increased

Now looking for a solid tower brace for the shock towers...  Too bad there's not one available for the vert's rear towers.

Aren't the rear towers effectively braced by the convertible's rear structure?

I don't see how you'd get any additional bracing back there if they aren't.

WTB/WTT / wtt m50 with s50 cams for complete m42
« on: February 26, 2010, 06:33:24 PM »
I've got one I'd be interested in trading. Complete. Wiring harness and ecu still intact. Also have a transmission.  E30 M42.

Just removed a couple of months ago. Running and shifting great.

Higher uncertain mileage.

I'm in Minnesota though so we'd have to figure out how to do a swap.

PM me if interested.
