geez this thermostat is the gift that keeps on giving....

the last one as mentioned previously with the cracked housing didn't seem to sit in its recess maybe causing the house to crack when nipped up.

so when i moved house i just ripped the thermostat out and drove without one. the engine still got noticably hot by the time i got to my destination.

thought it was about time i got the car on the road again, so a new thermastat and coolant and we should be good. or so i thought.

this time i purchased the OEM bmw item (Behr) hoping it should fit better.....wrong.....

you can see the o-ring under the lip of the thermostat here no sitting flush with the block and it isn't even resting on the o-ring.  Its as if the thermostat is too round for the block and it sits proud.

does anyone else get this when replacing there thermostat's?

cheers

yeah it has an oring, didn't think of that, just though i needed a gasket to seat the pump to the block but the oring will do it.

There is a bit of surface corosion in the bore where the water pump going from water sitting doing nothing.  Am i best just using a little wire brush to clear it out? and then bolt the new water pump in.

thanks for the help, now i have my parts i can see a knick in the gasket, but i can't see if this is meant to line up with anything on the block, i take it there is something on the thermostat it should line up with?

also i didn't get a gasket with my water pump, and i can't see any part number on bmwfans for a water pump gasket.  i take all i need is some instant gasket stuff for the water pump?

cheers

Hi All

just changing the thermostat in my e30 and need a quick hand.

how do you remove the cam position sensor that crosses over the front of the thermostat cover? i have the thermostat out but i can see this getting in the way trying to reassemble the thermostat.

also how clean do you have to get the block mounting surface for the thermostat cover? i have it pretty clean (all previous gasket removed) and i think it will seal good with the instant gasket on there as well.  just want to make sure it doesn't need to be spotless to seal.

thanks

i assume that if it hold normal compression then the HG is fine and it confirms a damaged profile gasket?

i've had a look around and can find a heap of info and run throughs for replacing the head gasket, but can't find that thread on replacing the profile gasket within taking the head off? mind pointing me in the right direction?

thanks

hi guys

A couple of weeks ago my engine ran hot due to the outled pipe on the head corroding. I didn't run it dry and deffinantly pulled over before it stopped.  So i fixed the head up and was able to do test it out without any problems.  Park it in the shed to organise registration to find it leaking coolant.

this is probably a weeks worths.

just checking that this is a head off job for a gasket or a crack and not some quick fix tighten a hose clamp or something i have forgotten?

it leaking on the RHS of the engine and running off the AC compressor, sump and engine mount i think:

this is looking from the top of the engine down to the AC comressor, you can see the chain tension at the bottom to give you some orientation:

Might be time to get that touque wrench and pull the head.

Thanks Glenn

Engine + Driveline / m44 into an m42 model car
« on: July 21, 2009, 04:45:21 AM »
just been doing some research on this conversion as my m42 died and have come across a m44.

In relation to your saying the intake mani doesn't fit under the hood here is a link to a e30 on ebay for sale with a m44 with the m44 manifold.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/E30-BMW-318i-M-technic-1988_W0QQitemZ300331993264QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Cars?hash=item45ed2e88b0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A10%7C66%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A100

Other then the intake manifold what are the other problem areas for the conversion?

Thanks Glenn

Try this link. Click on the Main Groups button (at the top), Select 11 Engine and then M42. Then click on the Constr. Group button (at the top).

ee1394.com expired on 12/27/2008 and is pending renewal or deletion - that kind of sucks

i know i need a special tool to do a compression check is there anything needed to check the cooling system pressure?

So you are suggesting that i may only need a value cover gasket and it not a cracked head?

Hi all

I recently blew out a heater hose and i think i may have done some damage to the head (read oil down the spark plug so i think its cracked).  Is there a write up on pulling off the head so i can confirm this?

Or what manual do you guys use? i know there is no bently for the e30 318is, is there a bentley for the e30 318is which would be similar if not the same?

Thanks Glenn

Engine + Driveline / Split heater hose
« on: December 02, 2008, 09:03:18 PM »
Hello all

Driving to work this morning my car slit the top heater host where is comes out of the head.  I managed to park it before it got to hot some im hoping there is no damaged.  No milkshake under the oil filler cap nor on the dipstick, fingures crossed.

Any way while i wait for a order of heater hoses to come from BMA can i simply bypass the heater core will a stand length of heater hose?  Connect where the cooland comes out of the back of the head into the plastic pipe under the intake?

Thanks Glenn
