M42 Reference / Engine failure / timing chain slipped
« on: September 11, 2008, 05:41:18 AM »
Seems like I'm the only guy capable of breaking a M42 before the 100.000Km mark!!

It was years ago, a '94 E36 with just 70.000kms! I still don't know what happened, maybe very low oil level. I was just going flat out in 5th, 6000rpm plus, and the engine started to make a very hard knocking noise when I put my foot down (probably crankshaft bearings), and after a couple of miles, the engine blew!
Oil pressure warning light on, engine working on 3 cylinders, idling at around 3Krpm, big hole in the block (intake side), and a conrod missing!:D

Engine + Driveline / M42 vs S14?
« on: September 10, 2008, 07:06:07 PM »
If it's top speed performance you're after, sell the E30 and buy a E36! You've got then pleanty of options to make 150mph easily.

The E30 appeal is much more than straight line performance and top speed marks!

They have OE offset ones too that offer more camber if you want it,

yeah, I've noticed that! I'm swapping the control arm bushes to eccentric M3 ones, that are known for giving more caster and camber, and probably these offset top mounts would go nice with them. Problem is they are much more expensive, more than double price, compared with the standard ones.

Engine + Driveline / Engine rev limit
« on: January 10, 2008, 06:53:01 AM »
I've ordered a chip that has the rev limit changed to 7K, so I was wondering if it was safe to rev it there.

I think that 7K is enough for what I'm planning, cause I won't go radical about engine spec, keeping it standard with the chip and a KN panel filter. Plus, I'd need another rev counter!:D

Engine + Driveline / Engine rev limit

Higher rev limit can be beneficial on stock engine even if it does not increase power. On my favourite track there is two places where I need to upshift for few seconds, then almost immediately downshift before entering a turn. That is 4 pretty useless gearshifts which could be avoided if I could stay on lower gear for few hundred revs longer :)

I know what you mean!;)

So, 7K is the limit, right?

Engine + Driveline / Engine rev limit

hi!

I was just wondering what is the real limit of a standard M42 (E30 in my case), in terms of revs... It cuts around 6,5k but I believe it can take more, even in standard form, considering the forged crank and rods...

The B12 kit includes B8 inverted Sprint shocks and matched H&R springs, I guess...

In fact the car is 100% stock, apart from a KN panel filter!

I'm planning on a Bilstein B12 kit, 4,10 LSD and not much else for now!

Hi all!!

New member from Portugal!
I own a 90' 318is E30 with 362kkms, and still makes me smile!
I used to have a 94' 318is E36 Coupe a few years ago, but I have to admit that the E30 is more of a drivers car!

I'm planning to upgrade the car in several issues, so I hope I can find here the help I need, as well as help other members too!

Here's a pic of the bastard:

M42 Buyer's Guide / Which E30's come with M42?
« on: December 14, 2007, 11:36:32 AM »
Here in Europe, only the 2 door came with the M42.

Off-topic: In Portugal and Italy, there was the indeed "poor-man M3", called 320is, which is basically a 318is setup with a 2 liter S14 engine producing 192hp, with M3 gearbox and shorted (3,45) diff!
