For Sale / Ultimate E30 Head Unit
« on: June 04, 2010, 02:47:45 PM »
I have one for sale, these are super rare now and not sure if they were ever available in the USA.

Becker Grand Prix 7992 with RED Illumination

This unit is a modern feature packed head unit with classy old skool looks that looks perfect in an E30. It features CD, CD-R and MP3 CD playback, Twin RDS Radio and full featured Bluetooth® Phone control all accessed form the unit itself. It can accept an iPod/iPhone (right upto 3GS!) adapter which lets you control and charge from the unit controls and also has Aux-In and Amp Pre-Outs. It uses an ISO connector - I will throw in an adapter for the BMW 17-Pin block.

Becker is the OEM manufacturer for BMW, Porsche and Mercedes.

It is RED but actually shows up as deep amber - great match for the E30.

This is brand new in box with all accessories (microphone and keys etc).

$470 shipped to the USA.

+$100 for iPod/iPhone interface.

PayPal welcome.

You can easily see over 150BHP at the flywheel with a chip / remap.

It';s common knowledge, over here at least, that M42's make over the factory 136 and more into the mid 140's.

You can see 165+ with a full hi-flow exhaust and remap.

Big Bore throttle bodies and K&N filters apparently do nothing.

It's exhaust and ECU then you;re in to forced induction, cams, ITB etc etc.

Should be straight swap - usual issues are E36 EWS Security is in the ECU and the DISA intake manifold doesn't fit.

You guys are right, first plug is for carbon Canister but this is not used in the UK.

Second pic is my main concern tho.

I recently deleted the throttle heater plate on my car, more for the simplified vacuum tubing than the mythical BHP increase.

I seem to have these left over:

1 AFM-type Connector

And this. This has fuel coming from it on start, I believe it's some kind of breather/vent tube? Some owners have fitted a small filter on the end if I'm not mistaken. All fuel lines are where they're supposed to be. The car runs perfectly. What's supposed to happen with this?

Electrical / Non-Start electrics HELL

Not yet - has been delayed in the post!

The starter motor now starts but the engine still does not catch - no reason, just like that!

Still no activity from the fuel pump at any key position.

An additional check - no voltage to the coils at any key position.

No DME type light on the dash. So why would it pop like that? And what's to stop it happening again with a new ECU?

1990 318iS M42.

I removed some redundant alarm / immobilizer wiring that had it's control unit cut out years ago - car always ran fine.

I went to start the car after a few months of restoration and my engine guys said it started and ran fine after they'd rebuilt it.

So I go to start it, it cranks for a second then I hear a loud pop from the engine bay and now nothing. Some diagnostics I've since done.

Is the battery okay - YES
Does ignition wire (black/yellow) from key have voltage - YES
Does ignition cutout loop (green/blue) have voltage - YES
Does Fuel Pump Relay and DME/ECU relay have voltage - YES
Are those relays okay - YES
Are all relevant fuses okay - YES
Does starter crank when voltage applied directly - YES
Is there spark - NO
Does fuel pump engage on ignition - NO

Basically there is no spark, no ignition and no fuel. The only thing I can think of that affects all these simultaneously is the ECU and I have fried it somehow. I will check the coils tomorrow for voltage and also try my spare ECU but after that I'm out of ideas...

General Topics / OBC retrofit question

Most of the time this is down to the Backlight Bulb being dead. Looks just like it's dead but in fact it's just the bulb - $20 from BMW or $1-2 at a electrical store and solder in yourself...
