Engine + Driveline / Engine Knocking/Clatter *Video*
« on: March 27, 2008, 11:49:42 PM »
Well I just got the motor back together a few weeks ago (Replaced all the guides and the tensioner).  I have only driven the car a few hundred miles, it has driven flawless thus far.  The other day I took it out to a fun backroad near my house... after a couple miles of high rpms and tight corners I got back to the main road.  I pulled off in a cool picture spot of mine to snap some of the car and noticed the engine was a little loud.  Then yesterday I took it for a spin and between 3000-3200 rpms I get a knocking/clatter sound.

The specific sound is ~14 seconds in the video...

Any ideas?

Right when I was walking out the door to go to work the UPS guy shows up with the spacers.  Just get them on a few minutes ago, after I got home.  Just need to put a couple coats of wax on the car and I will finally take it for a drive and get some real pictures.

Looking great.  I like the wheels. Where did you get them?  I have a schwartz 325 DD that would look great with those. I have the H&R sport/Billy sport combo on my m42 and love it.  More pics and info on the vader bracket mod and install please.  Keep us posted.
Dan.

They don't make them anymore, but mine will actually be up for sale in a week or two.  I got a fantastic deal on some forged BBS wheels that I could not pass up.

Anyone got hot leads on BMW floor mats?  This car didn't have any when I bought it.  I have seen them for sale for like $200, but forget that.

KO Peformance is selling genuine BMW mats for $89.50 right now.

Incredible deal... http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=94359

I just used the Rug Doctor steam cleaner with the upholstery attachment the other week and it took out all of my stains.  You can rent it for $20 at Lowes.  No need to make an hour job a day long project.

My carpet was nasty from the previous owner.  I had coffee stains, red stains from his kids juice, it took it all out.  Look at my profile thread for the after pics.

Got the Vaders and the H&R/Bilsteins installed.  I also threw the Hock R's on, but their replacements are on the way. 8)

*Forgot to update.  Here is my post from another forum dated 2/19/08*

Got a few more things done this past weekend.  I had planned to finish detailing the car, but my new pad lasted 10 minutes before the glue let go and shot across the garage.  Autogeek shipped me a replacement Monday, but it won't be here until Fri.

So instead, I rug doctor'd the carpet.  Then I installed the aluminum gauge trim rings, the z4 3.0 shifter, black door panels, the armrest rear seat, new bumper trim, new kidneys, and the new euro grilles.  This weekend, if I have time, I will make the brackets and get Vaders in.

Got in some work with the porter cable earlier today.  Here is the paint after the clay bar, paint cleaner, and the intermediate swirl cutter.  The white specs are just dust from the pad/polish that I hadn't wiped off yet.  Just thought it looked cool so I snapped a picture with the old camera I had in the garage.

There are still some old hard water stains that left etch marks that won't come out, but it is coming along pretty well.  Much better than what I started out with.  Tomorrow I will try and finish it up if I have time.  I still have to do the fine swirl cutter, then polish, then wax.

Yeah, the E46 COP's.  Scored them for $40 from a Dad who's dumbass son downshifted to first gear going down the highway and blew his motor.

« on: February 11, 2008, 02:37:31 PM »
Warning: Teaser...

Picked up this 318i a few months back for the sum of $500 .  The previous owner thought the timing chain was about to let loose, but it was just the infamous upper oil pan bolts/gasket.  Locktite and a gasket and it was as good as new.

Pics from the craiglist ad.  Check out those sweet floormats, seat, and steering wheel covers :p:

My third bedroom was empty in my house, so it is now a dedicated e30 parts room. :D

In the parts room awaiting install:
New Bumper Trim (Wired the side markers to function as blinkers, so I just bought new US trim)
New Roundels
New Kidneys
New Euro Front Grilles
Black Leather Vaders
Black Rear Seat w/ Armrest and Ski Bag
Black Door Panels w/ Armrests
Aluminum Gauge Trim Rings
Haledj's COP Conversion Plate and Hardware
E46 Coils
Z4 3.0 SSK
TSW Hockenheim Wheels/Tires (16x7.5)
H&R Sport Springs
Bilstein Sports
Bilstein Sport Strut Collars
Bilstein Strut Collar Tool
Convertible Rear Shock Mounts
Treehouse Racing Control Arm Bushings
Control Arms
Tie Rods

I will keep the thread updated as my parts room empties. :)  The car is getting somewhat of a paint restoration right now thanks to my trusty porter cable and a basket full of products from Autogeek.net.  After that I will start on the rest.

Engine management / Has 318i and 31is a same chip?
« on: January 28, 2008, 12:35:11 PM »
The U.S. 318i had an M42 in '91, same as the 318is.  If you are buying it from an American company, chances are it was made for an m42 318i and not your m40 318i.

Engine + Driveline / Timing chain might not be the problem? (pics)
« on: January 17, 2008, 12:30:35 PM »
I bought the cam lock tool which came with the flywheel lock tool as well.  They are both in place, so no problem there.  One thing I was worried about it getting the camshaft sprockets at 0 degrees.  They are adjustable but have no hash marks or anything to know when it is advanced or otherwise.

I am going to replace the timing chain and the crank sprocket, but nothing else even has wear marks.  I am dreading it but I need to drop the upper pan and replace that gasket too, if you can tell from the picture when the bolts came out the gasket moved and is now covering the bolts holes.
