Yes.  I found them and removed them.

My upper oil pan won't come off.  I can move the front side to side and up & down, but it acts like it's stuck.  I jacked the engine up and it looks like there is plenty of room for it to fall out.

I removed the three torx bolts at the bellhousing, and all the inner & outer bolts at the front & down the sides.   Is there a hidden bolt at the back that I'm missing?

I'd like to introduce myself to my fellow M42 masochists.  I just bought my second '91 318ic (I had one back in '97 also).

My name is Larry, and I'm old and ugly - hence the 'Crusty' nick.

The piece on the right looks like it's been in there for a while.  The metal backing plate is nice and smooth where the cam chain has been beating on it.

I'm new here, but I've had a truckload of 3 series cars.  I just bought a 318ic with a busted M42.  I just took the valve cover off and found some pieces that obviously don't belong in the chain case.

The starter will spin the crank, but the cams don't move. The chain feels tight.

So. . .do I have a broken crank? A broken crank timing gear?

What are my options?

TIA, and I'll get some pics of the pieces up in a moment.
