Engine + Driveline / Pinion preload
« on: August 04, 2022, 08:30:12 PM »
Anyone have the specs for the small case pinion bearing preload? I've come across 5-9in pounds and 20-24in pounds. I really don't feel like paying for the BMW TIS subscription as I'm sure someone has this information.

I'm not changing anything except the 4 bearings and seals and I marked the original carrier shims for the side they came off, so I shouldn't have to worry to much about backlash (I'll get some making compound and make sure the contact pattern is correct though).

I have some well used H&R races (I don't know the number off the top of my head) that just came off my 318iS. Installed brand new 6 years ago, but I haven't driven the car since 2020, so only 4 years of use, and even then that was only like 7 months out of the year. The rears look like crap, but it's just cosmetic, nothing a new powder job wouldn't fix. I'll let them go pretty cheap.

how much to trim my tweeters down haha? I'll pay a decent amount and return shipping lol. The tweeters I picked out for my system have a huge flange that needs to machined down. Figured I'd ask.

Today's update:

I finished modifying the tweeters to fit in the pods. It was pretty easy...making the fixture was more work than modding the tweeters lol.

Since putting ferrofluid-filled tweeters into a lathe & spinning them really fast seemed like a bad idea, I decided to make a fixture that would hold them on a rotary table. There the cuts could be made with a mill.

The tweeter is held onto the fixture with an M4x0.7 x 16 machine screw. There is a boss on the back that fits tightly into a bore in the rotary table, thus making it easy to center it on there. I made the jig from a D2.5" 6061 aluminum bar scrap.

The milling operation was simple. I chopped off the flange and knocked a little material off of the front to a diameter of 38mm so it would fit nicely into the existing tweeter pod hole. Obviously, I didn't want to cut too much off or else the nice diffuser would fall off, and probably end up destroying the dome in the process. I held a shop-vac hose next to the cutter during the process to keep chips out of the thing.

Here they are, all chopped up.

Fitted into the pod...

There is about 2mm of clearance between the diffuser & the grill...perfect! I stuck them in the car and there is like 10mm of extra room behind them. That is good, because I would have been pissed if they weren't going to fit!

WTB/WTT / fuel pump bracket/holder/
« on: March 15, 2022, 06:50:46 AM »
Looking for fuel pump bracket/holder/frame thingy (I don't care if the actual pump itself is junk or not)

1991 318iS

With good condition studs for the level sending unit. My current one has 3 of 4 studs stripped out, so it doesn't sit securely.

Engine + Driveline / Fuel hose part number and rating
« on: March 13, 2022, 12:17:41 PM »
Looking for part number for fuel hose for my 318iS. It's the line coming from the track to the inlet side of the fuel filter. RealOEM said it's 16 12 1 180 399, however the picture shows that's not necessarily the case, it has the correct bend, but nowhere near long enough. (The two highlighted pictures aren't my vehicle)

Related, is the BMW hose j30-r9 rated or r7? I bought some 8mm hose from Belmetric, rated as j30-r7, but web searches say down injection hose should be r9. Photo of Belmetric hose specs attached as well.

Figured it out, it clips on the HVAC box, on the passenger side next to the recirc flap motor

It's neither, the seatbelt timer I disconnected, and the turn signal is in place. Based on the wiring diagram its the HVAC controller, I just have no idea where it goes

Electrical / Relay Identification
« on: January 22, 2021, 12:12:54 PM »
putting my new dash in, and I have no idea where this relay mounts or how it mounts to the body/steering column/hvac box? It has long-ish wires coming off before it merges into the main harness behind the cluster, which leads me to believe it goes somewhere behind the radio/HVAC controls. Any ideas?

General Topics / Under dash wiring - ignition harness bracket
« on: January 18, 2021, 05:01:12 PM »
Does anyone have any pictures of the brackets and connectors under the dash - I just replaced a bunch of floor panels, and the firewall insulation and I'm having a tough time putting it all back together. before I put the new dash in, I want to make sure I have all the wire harnesses fastened to the body/brackets.

I can't figure out where/how the ignition harness connects to the body. I believe it slides onto another big plug, but after that I'm stumped.

I had a couple questions on your tweeter sail dimensions.

I noticed on r3v thread, someone posted the below picture (marked up)

based on your dimensioned photo below is the 38mm the green (retained inner lip) or pink (removed inner lip) width in the image above? Did you leave the inner lip intact so you could retain the stock grill?

Also what is the max depth the tweeter can be, I saw your tweeter dimensioned photo, but wasn't sure how much clearance you had behind that before you hit the door metal. I'm trying to figure out what the max size tweeters I can utilize, with or without stock grill if necessary. I also have a buddy who started 3D printing these sails, and wanted to see if he made the openings say 50mm wide if that would protrude and hit my dash or not.

I believe I took pictures and posted them in my member profile thread when I fixed the clutch spring and added the new bushing. If I remember, where I have those pictures on my other computer, I will check and send them you way. Sorry, not the best answer.

I thought I looked through all your threads, that's where I went first, but I must have missed it
