M42 Reference / How far can you go? Fuel tank cap.

But that's an Imperial gallon isn't it? (which is equal to 1.2 US gallon)

Sorry, it is yeah.

That would explain all the 25s I was wondering about :p

My car should be doing 37 in your speak so then :)

Car is a 318iS, BBTB, adjusted timing, heater plate removed, re-map, 4.1 188 case LSD, lightweight flywheel and few other bits.

the 37/45 mpg was got by combined driving on a round trip of fast b-road driving and return leg of more easy driving with a little bit of urban driving too.

It only manages 25mpg (US gallon) on normal fuel though while it managed the 37 every time I ran it on premium.

I get about 35-40miles once the light comes on.

Best mpg I got was 45 with 98RON

Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Buildup: My quest for NA 280 hp

Yes, but I meant the position of them and the plenum design with one tb.

The S42 had what you are thinking about like the picture you posted although they had slide ITBs rather than a single tb before the plenum.

Could easily fit an extra bank to an M42 with even the stock inlet. Would need an ECU to control it though.

We use the back 95% of an E30 prop shaft and and forward yoke (not sure if that is spelled correctly) of an E36 prop shaft.  Had a local drive shaft shop cut weld and balance the drive shaft.

Thats what I did. Cut and welded it myself with the help of the lathe though.

Yep, they work very well but our track cars are also for drifting so wheels were getting caught on full lock.

So solution was stock shaped arms but with adjustable rose-joints at the outer ball-joints. Don't give as much adjustment as the ones pictures above but offer the best compromise for our application.

I'll be making the same sort of thing as in the above pics for my track/race car though as it won't need as much lock.

Instal front aluminium arms from E46 and you will get good caster camber and mass reduction in suspension moving parts, that will increase grip and so on... ;)

Indeed! Makes a great difference.

We just use custom rose-jointed arms on our track E30s and E36s though

The S50 ITBs are kinda too small for the 1.8
Throttle modulation can be pretty difficult.

Worl very well with a 2/2.1L engine though

Nice, i'm really diggin my M42 so I already have plans for a stroker.:D

Yeah, my iS was great fun to drive by the time I took it off the road but I won't be happy unless its putting out at least 100bhp/litre next times its back in action :D

Ok cool, then I will be holding onto my M40 block.

Do you have spoecs on your m42b21?? I'm tallking about crank, bore, rods, pistons, etc.

I actually threw out an old M40b16 block the other day... might pull it back out of the skip now that I think of it :o

As for the 2.1, just going the usual route really... M47 crank, 86.4mm bore, custom rods and pistons etc with a little work on the head, few tricks on the bottom end and made look all fancy and sound nice with some S54 itbs and airbox :p

Still gathering bits for it at the moment as other things always pop up and I'm also trying to build my M52 M-tec Touring for a daily at the moment.

M40 blocks are the same as the M42 if your talkiing about the bare block.

Well, any M44 I've ever driven and that includes 3 or 4 I put into E30s on both the E30 inlet and management and M44 inlet and management and they never seem to be as willing to rev to the redline as an M42b18.

As the bottom end is lighter which should help and valvetrain being abit lighter, I'm blaming the rockers. I know it should make fookall difference but thats just my experience of it anyway.

For my M42b21 which will also be on S54 throttle bodies and custom CF airbox, I'll be more or less making a 4 cylinder S52 head so should be more than capable of taking abuse all the way to a 7-8000rpm redline :D

A supercharged 2.1 would make an awesome engine!!! one of the guys I know over here has a rotrex on a 1.8 making nearly 300bhp. Could only imagine what it would produce in a 2.1 considering a good 2.1 bottom end with no FI with just stock intake can make 200bhp alone.

2/2.1L stroker..... AND... supercharger :D

Do it... You know it'll be awesome!

By the way... Sell the rebuilt M42 head and get another to build to suit your engine.
Don't get an M44 head, they're shite for building a nice revy engine due to having rockers.

I find the M5 mounts fine and don't notice any real difference in harshness.

Even if there was an increase in harshness... I'd live with it if it meant I had no issues of the manifolds ever managing to lock the steering column :p

I'll do a proper thread on the 6 speed swap when I get a chance ;)

WTB/WTT / WTB: 3.64 small case open diff
« on: August 07, 2011, 04:16:27 PM »
Yeah, the medium case is a straight swap. All you need to do is shorten the prop-shaft by loosening it by the center bearing by unscrewing the collar on the splines.

Once the diff is in then, tighten up the collar again.

Funnily enough track work doesn't seem to be that hard on diffs.

We've ran an E36 M3 (euro 3L) Compact drift car for two seasons on a small case diff (4.27) and only broke one.

I've broken or have taken out destroyed loads of small cases diffs on road cars though and even one was just in a 316i last week!

3.73 LSD will be perfect for a turbo M42 by the way

I'm using a 3.91 in mine but mine is only going to be a 2.1 on ITBs and have a 6 speed box from an E46 M3 anyway :D

We run the M20 flywheel and clutch off this M42 turbo.  We just added the E36 5 speed ZF trans.  Does anyone know what TOB would work?  We tried the G260 TOB and that didn't work.  We have a 323 TOB but we haven't tried that yet.

Any ideas which TOB will work with our combination?

323i throw-out bearing will work perfectly with an M20 lightened flywheel and clutch.

I used that setup with my 6 speed swap and worked a treat.

For my prop, I shortened the E30 prop and welded the E36 flange onto the end of it.
