Swaps, Turbos, Buildups / Re: M42/M44 ITB Kit Design

I discovered a few days ago that C5 Corvette Calipers (available on Holden cars here) are a direct bolt on up front, so was going to give those a crack and jumped on to have a search and see if anyone had tried it.

Have you tried those C5 calipers? What is size of brake disc did you use?

You can also swap e46 325i and 328i rear brakes. Discs are 294mmx19mm and hand brake is same like e36.

i had the S14b20 three times, great engine, had the 46mm ITBs , great power band, the ITBs from the S14 would fit with custom work of cutting ,machining and welding, however, bare in mind the S14 is a totally different engine in design and intend for use, the least things we can think of are the 93.4mm bore vs the 84-85mm in the M42/M44 engines, the 38mm intake valves vs the 35mm in the M42/M44, the air box size, the runners length... many variables here, i doubt the drivability  will be acceptable if done.
M42/M44 intake valves are 33mm.  :)

Engine + Driveline / Re: info on a engine

I don't think that those are Dbilas ITBs cos they are 48mm. 318IS mit 48 Drosselklappen = 318is with 48 throttlebodys. Dbilas are usually 45mm. Drezahl 8100 = revs 8100 btw.

Engine + Driveline / Re: Identifying Flywheel
« on: December 16, 2015, 01:43:47 PM »
All ECE 318is with M42 engine and without AC came with single mass flywheel. Flywheel is the same in models e30 M40, M42 and E36 M40, M42, M43 and E34 M40, M43. Partnumber is
11 22 1 739 315.

Pressure plate is LUK not LUX. M42 pressure plate is stiffer than M40 or M43 pressure plate. It is used in E30 and E36 models that came with M42 motor and single mass flywheel.

Best option is very old M20 flywheel from models E12 520, E28 520i -> sep. '84, E21 320, 323i and E30 320i, 323i -> sep. '84. Flywheel weights in at 6,3kg = 13,9lbs. Clutch is 228mm.

interesting... do you have any experience with such a setup?

what kind of power/torque should be expected with this setup and mild cams (between 260 and 280°) with E85 and MS3X standalone? 150hp at the wheels?
Nope, I don't have. My engine is still under construction and I found that piston setup after I bought M52B28 pistons. I decided to use them. Maybe next time...

I did a quick CR calculation using stock bottom end and M52TUB25 piston: 12.5:1 CR. this is without valve pocket volume as I don't have any volume measurement.
so this is the max theoritical CR with that combo, considering that each additional cc to the dead volume has a big impact on the final CR...

so yes, it may also be a good combo as it doesn't need any machining but a 2mm HG to achieve a 0.8mm squish.
And you can use quite wild cam with high valve lift without machining pistons.

How about plan C?

M52B25Tu (euro) flat top pistons. Piston height is little bit bigger, 32,7mm vs. M50b25 32,55mm vs. M52B28 ~31,8mm. These pistons already have more then 3mm deep valve pockets intake and exhaust side. With thicker 2mm (stock)HG you get 0,8mm squish. I can't calculate exact CR but deep valve pockets will lower it.  You can also shave the pistons 0,2mm to get 1,0mm squish.

Deyan:

Are you sure both M42B18 (1st gen) and M42B18 tu (2nd gen) head has same combustion chamber volume? These heads have different part numbers and those engines use different pistons also. M42B18 piston has deeper dish (4,5 mm) vs. tu piston (3,56 mm).

Seems like they are using custom made pulleys, maybe vibration damper too?

Terve.

They don't use vibration damper at all.
