WTB/WTT / WTB: A/C idler pulley bracket/tensioner
« on: May 22, 2012, 12:46:44 AM »
I need the small, triangular-shaped bracket that the a/c idler pulley bolts to.  It also has another bolt in it that is then used to tension the idler pulley.  The bolt hole for the idler pulley is stripped out in mine. '91 318is.

Thanks,
Todd Z.

Exterior / Was there ever a dark green 318is color?

As far as I know the E30 318i and 318is only came in Black, White, Silver, and Red.  I have never seen anything else from the factory.  The E36 came in green, I think it was Boston but I could be wrong.  Too bad because I'd love to have a E30 318is in green on tan, Hennarot on black or salmon grey on cardinal.

Yeah, a green on tan one would be beautiful but I'm with you on the colors you mentioned - those are the ones I've seen too.

Thanks for your input.

Possible.  The 318 was a budget car, likely not available in a bunch of colors like the 325is and the M3 were.  I recall a few different shades of green then, like Laguna and Boston green.  The '92 318 had a lot of color choices.

OK, thanks.  I was trying to find some factory literature that gave the colors but haven't found it yet.  I've seen them in red, silver, white and black.  A green would be nice.

I keep thinking there was a dark green color for the 318is, but maybe all the pics I'm seeing are just faded black ones?

Thanks,

Recently purchased a 1991 318is as a daily driver so I can keep my precious M3 in the safety of my garage.  I first learned of the 318is while I was living in Germany the last 3 years and now that I am back in the states I am very happy to have found a very solid, rust free E30 318is with LSD.

I found the car in Phoenix, AZ and had it transported to me in Tulsa, OK.  It was pretty battered by the AZ sun, but nothing some TLC and a lot of elbow grease couldn't fix.  Delivered last Friday, and spent pretty much all day Saturday and Sunday polishing the faded paint and getting it cleaned up.

Looking forward getting to know some of you and sharing information about this awesome BMW.

If I had known it could have looked that good, I would've kept it! :)  It certainly went to a good home. Looking forward to all the updates on it.

Engine + Driveline / Easiest way to change belts

Thanks for all the tips, guys.  I'm 6'4" and leaning over the thing isn't my cup of tea anymore either so I think I'll give it a go from below...

OK, went out tonight and quickly got the piece off the bottom that gives me clear access to the belts.  Examined the alternator belt more closely and it's nearly worn through as well so I'll be changing while I'm in there.

Next question - anyone have good p/n's for the 3 belts?  I picked up two from the local parts monkey and it looks like I'm batting 0.500 at best at this point.

He sold me a 4 groove serpentine belt for the a/c, which definitely doesn't look right.  (Gates P/N K040335).  The p/s belt I have is Goodyear P/N 15321 or Gates P/N 7315.  Can anyone give me a good p/n for the a/c and alternator belts so I can do battle with the parts guy?

TIA,
Todd Z.

Bit of an E30 newbie here.....I threw my a/c and p/s belts on Sunday.  Went and picked up replacements last night and got to looking closely at things last night.

Since the belts are so low on the front of the engine, is it easier to run the car up on jackstands and remove the lower plastic piece (whatever it's called) and install them from the bottom rather than snaking them down from the top?

Thanks,

Interior / Steering Wheel not coming off?????

I have tried to pull the wheel off with out the key before and didn't do it the only way I did it was to get a long pole and feed it in to the steering wheel and snap the steering lock

Thanks for the tips, guys.  I guess if I really want it, I'll have to try and figure out where the lock is at in the assembly.

Smack it gently with a hammer around the circumference of the wheel - it sounds like it is just stuck. The key should be in the ON/UNLOCKED position when you try to remove it.

Is there any way to remove a wheel if the ignition is locked?  I found a nice wheel at the junkyard today and it's obviously loose on the shaft but apparently the ignition lock is preventing it from coming off.  Of course there's no keys to unlock the ignition at the junkyard....

Electrical / Can "sticky" switches be cleaned some how?

Great question I have been wondering this as well as my Rear defrost is always getting stuck and I have to make sure to undo it cause I don't want the blown up rear window.  Anyone have a solution for this problem?

My rear defrost switch kept getting stuck too.  Kept having to pop it back out with my pocket knife blade - not the smartest thing in the world to do.  I kept my eyes peeled at the pick-a-parts and finally helped myself to a nice one a few weeks ago.  Problem solved.  I always take the window switches when I'm there too.  I probably have enough spare window switches to last me for the next 10 years :-).   They fit in your pocket so they're free :-).
