Engine + Driveline / Lifter diagnosis and replacement.

I am looking into replacing my valve lifters due to the common ticking. I need to do it cheap, but want to make sure I don't hurt the engine. I have a second M42 head that came with my car, but I have no knowledge of the condition of the lifters in that head. I am hoping those are good and I can put them in my engine. Is there a way to test the lifters out, or check them?

I am looking for a m42 to put in my 1991 318i. I would prefer one with less than 150,000 miles, but will consider higher mileage. Also may be interested in a short-block. Let me know what you have and we can work out a deal!

Thats what I thought, I had just found a few places that said like 113HP for the vert.
The 4.27 gives it better acceleration right? whereas the 4.10 is geared a little more for faster speeds?
And do you know if I can put the newer intake manifold on the 91?

I just bought a 1991 318i convertible with an M42, but it needs a new engine. I want to stay with a 4-cylinder, but would like to get good performance out of it. My question is how many HP is that engine? and how many HP was the 318is?
I have found several different numbers for it.
