ok, started the car last night and it ran like total shi*....missed horribly all the way home.  what would cause it running somewhat decent in the morning but like garbage in the afternoon?  I am at a loss at this point.

Thanks
Matt

I am having a similar problem but not at WOT.  It misses a small amount when first depressing the accelerator then smoothes out. It will do this in all gears.  The idle is perfect with ac on or off.  I have replace the coils, plugs wires and the AFM...no change.

Any ideas?  Seems like the concensus is the computer or the cam position sensor.  Could it be something as simple as a fuel filter that needs changing?

As always, you guys are a wealth of knowledge!

Thanks
Matt

I am having the exact same thing happen. It sputters and spits for the first couple of minutes then smoothes out and runs fine.

Thanks again for all your help on these cars!!!!!

So I have a question.  What if I have replaced the timing chain tensioner and I still have the rattling noise between 3000 and 5000 rpm.  It doesn't change the way it runs, but it is extremely irritating as it sounds cheap....Does this mean a timing chain replacement?  I just bought the 1.9 Z3 tensioner and am going to re-replace and see what happens.

Thanks!

Thanks, but the previous owner already installed a hp chip.  I am actually considering selling the car.  It seems that the engine is a pretty over engineered piece and for a daily get to work car I don't want to have to worry about a high maintenance vehicle.

If anyone is interested, it is a nice car, AC works GREAT, perfect interior, almost new tires, etc.

Thanks!
Matt

Problem solved.

Hi guys.  I replaced the 4 coil packs.  Problem solved, the car is running like a champ....except for the timing chain rattle/slap...I have changed the timing belt tensioner.  Is this pretty normal for an engine with approx 130000 miles?

Thanks again!

Hello,
I am a newbie to the M42 engine but have had years of experience with other models.  My question, I replaced the plugs and wires but am having a nuisance problem.  For some reason the wire on the front plug works itself loose which is causing a slight miss.  I have tried everything to push the boot on the spark plug as far as possible.  Am I missing something?  Do you think that coil is going bad?  Also, what harm can be done if I remove the black plastic piece between the spark plug boots and the head?  Am I asking for problems with the boots melting?

Thanks in advance!
Matt
