Engine + Driveline / At a crossroads
« on: July 14, 2009, 10:17:14 PM »
About a month ago i overheated 8 hours from home. Shop in MS told me my head gasket was blown. Decided to trailer it home. Due to schedule have not had time to really look at it. Started it up a few days ago and noticed that i did
have some water leaking around the overflow tank at the bottom. Replaced tank and O ring.  The leak is still there somewhere from the bottom of the radiator so that is a must deal with.
The car heats up and climbs till it gets about 3/4 and there is no heat from the vents and the top hose gets really hot. I noticed some foam out the bleeder screw as well.

Still somewhat in head gasket denial i did a compression test both dry and with oil in the cylinders.

Dry
1-165
2-150
3-170
4-170

Oil in cylinder
1-220
2-200
3-225
4-225

2 questions. Is there still a chance i have a bad head gasket or could it be
water pump or thermostat(replaced) 2 months ago.

2nd question Is the bottom end a little too weak to put any more money in the top end?

BTW after the thermostat was replaced it seemed to run a little over 1/2 which it ran a little under 1/2 before so maybe my mechanic did not bleed it well.

The car has about 250k. It is not a factory color...It is yellow. Body looks
good. Front End is all new and have recent bilsteins. Interior is almost perfect. replaced hoses under intake about 1 year ago. Also a new lsd diff

Need some ideas here. Maybe another engine(used) have this one rebuilt?

Or maybe its not the head gasket.

Thanks for quick reply Dave im really thinking about tackling it. I did replace all of the hoses under the intake so im not totally helpless but this is somewhat of a bigger project. The
motor only uses 1 quart between changes and has about 220k on it.

Head Gasket blew 8 hours from home today. A shop pressure tested it and
diagnosed head gasket. Had to rent a truck and trailer to get it home.
I live about 3 hours south of st louis and 3 hours north of memphis about 70 miles west of I55.  I need some recommendations on maybe someone who can do the job. My mechanic has done a lot of suspension work, ac and assorted
other jobs but he doesnt want to tackle the head gasket.
Thanks for any referrals.

Thanks

Engine + Driveline / Differential Compatability

My car is sitting 5 hours from home. Started out as a loud screech louder when the clutch was engaged. Car finally quit. I engaged the clutch and tried to go and it just makes grinding noise from the rear of the car and if the car is in any gear it is no different than neutral.

I have no idea what is wrong but i could see smoke coming from the front part of the rear end where it fits to the drive shaft.

assuming that this the rear end are all e30's compatible?

thanks for weighing in.

Electrical / dashlights and right front and right rear lights
« on: February 14, 2008, 11:13:01 PM »
i just lost the right front parking light and all i have is bare wires. I put a test light on the wires and can make the test light blink but have no power to the back right tail light and the right front parking light.

Does a circuit have to be completed to make this work? Also my dash light went out at the same time. I might have touched 2 wires together but all of the fuses seem fine.

Thanks for any help

Hello All.   Bought the car in August 07. Has 180K and about 20K on a top end rebuild. Have put about 5K on it. Car uses 1 quart between changes
So Far:
AC Compressor
All New Belts
Replaced Vacuum hoses under intake
intake gasket
Plugs
Wires
Coil Pack
Voltage Regulator
Toyo Tires
Stocking up on spare parts: another coil pack, alternator, ECU, and various other fuses relays etc.

On The Way:
Tie rod assembly
Front Bumper(getting rid of the crappy look)
Chip.

Planned:
Springs
Shocks
Center Support Bearing
Flex disk

Comments/suggestions are welcome and have a couple of questions
I dont want to lower the car because of the back roads i have to travel on
so am i ok with stock springs? Is there a spring that will retain clearance?

Should i go with Koni or Bilsteins?

Fuses 3 and 18 are blowing. The auxillary fan still works good but my mirrors do not. Where should i start?

My blower motor has quit twice and started back on its own both times
Any ideas?

« on: October 24, 2007, 08:36:26 PM »
parked at stl airport for 7 days. no blower when i started the car. The fuse was blown and blew the next one instantly. Everything else seems to be fine gauges etc.

Where should i start?  resistor? Is there a relay for the blower in the fuse panel?

Thanks

Wow....from a cavalier to an "is" like turning a light switch on.  i had a 535is 1988 back in the 90's and the a 735is in the early 2000's then i drove a 92 lincoln towncar on the road and put over 350,000 miles on it. I bought my first 318is 1991 in july. it needs some things done and is a work in progress but is the most thrilling car i have ever owned. i have owned mopars in the 70's 71 roadrunner 383 71 duster 340 70 roadrunner 383 and an assorted lot of muscle cars but this car redefines the fun factor. Have fun fixing it up. there are a lot of bargain parts to be found here and on ebay and a lot of great support here and a wealth of knowledge. Welcome and enjoy the ride!!
