Always use a torque wrench on these engines- most are pretty low and you can strip stuff like the valve cover bolts or intake manifold pretty easily...

General Topics / Help me asses the condition of my timing components
« on: September 16, 2010, 11:12:05 PM »
I just finished the t-chain replacement.  It is not something to do away from home (if you do your own work), but if a shop is going to do it, it isn't rocket science, so a competent foreign car repair place can do it.  a BMW specialist would be good, but you don't need a dealer.
I think I would try to drive it- but I take a lot of risks...
If you do, pay attention to the sounds.  If it changes, stop.  Sumthins about to go.  Probably that idler pully.  Looking at the largest piece, it looks more like part of a race- not the pulley end.
It could be a piece of debris that got in there from outside somehow over many years of use- like maybe the washer on the chain guide bolt at the head- if anyone has ever had the head off that can happen- ask me how I know...

Are you stuck away from home if you don't drive?  Good luck!

The firing order is whatever whatever rhe sequence is, but that does not change where the plug wires go.  1, 2, 3, 4 from the front.

Engine + Driveline / Coolant boiling, bleeder hole leaking
« on: June 02, 2010, 08:13:59 AM »
Just to be sure, I would look at the no. 2 spark plug and be sure it is dry...

My radiator separated where the top hose attaches.  My brother had borrowed thge car.  He pulled into the driveway at 5:30 am so we could go to the airport and BOOM- Blue stuff blew right out of the grill and from around the left headlight (lights were on) like some kind of sci-fi movie.

It actually turned out to be a symptom- tiny crack in head (at cyl no 2) caused low coolant resulting in boiling- then high pressure blew up the old plastic hose connector.

Engine + Driveline / M42 head gasket coolant passages
« on: May 26, 2010, 04:35:54 PM »
Thats the way they are- but there is a sinle small hole in the gasket material at each of those passage connection poinbts. Ony no. 1 cylinder (i=I think) has full opening that matches the port shape.

I wondered if anyone had opened those holes more to increase flow...

General Topics / Do I need to use jack stands to swap tires?
« on: May 13, 2010, 06:11:06 PM »
My rule is that I must have jackstands if I go UNDER the car.  Tires are swapped alot for AX, so I just hope the car doesnt tumble someday.  Jacks DO fail.  It is always best to have a jackstand if you could be involved in the unexpected failure too.

I used BFH, liquid wrench, and beat a big ol' flathead into the gap.  I can't remember if it came slowly, or broke free, but it probably was a slow progressive thing that took more persistance than was expected.

IOW, no help from me.  Sorry.

Engine + Driveline / Intake cam ajustment

Best idle is from Mustang injectors.  I put my cams back to stock.

Two things or more going on-  coolant guage gets weird b/c the ground on the back of the instrument cluster gets loose.  Car overheats pretty quickly if something goes bad, like a thermostat, which (for me) had to occur while I was disregarding the erratic temp readings.   Then the cylinder head cracked at its know weak spot on cyl #2, and I got a really bad start stumble and then it would blow out/ dry up the coolant with the exploding air/ gas mix.  I know that is more than bad news, and could be totally not applicable.  see if the #2 spark plug is wet.  Try to smell for coolant in the exhaust.  If these are negative, at least it probably isn't a major internal problem...

I would bet it is item #1 in this pic-

You can see it better here

I learned about it in the "mess under the intake" thread...  Kinda a bitch to get to, but a good time to get all that other shit out of there.
