Engine + Driveline / M20 ring gear not interchangeable with M42
« on: December 17, 2011, 06:19:54 PM »
Just get a 4-wire M20 starter and be done with it. Used ones are like $30.

I've reused and retorqued one a half dozen times.

It'll leak, but just yank the fuel feed and return lines.  You don't need to depressurize it.

I could easily swap it in one day alone... but I've done it 4-5 times.

Engine + Driveline / Lightweight flywheels..how light is too light?
« on: September 19, 2011, 05:42:21 PM »
I have a 13lb 323 flywheel with the M20 clutch/PP.  Rattles a little at idle, but the idle is still silky smooth (helps that I have zero vacuum leaks).

Interior / push engine button

It's still a hassle because you need to use the key to turn the ignition to position two.

We have a push button start on our track car because a teammate threw the key away on accident. I don't think I'd want to go through the trouble on a street car.

I have the Hawk's too. Their cold bite isn't very good.

Unbolt the compressor and you'll see the bolts you'll need to remove to get the bracket off.

General Topics / Brake Caliper? Girling? ATE? Either?

You can use either, but I believe all 318is came with Girling. I'd suggest just rebuilding them; it's easy and cheap.

Engine + Driveline / LARGE oil leak
« on: June 03, 2011, 10:47:39 AM »
Torque process is 22lb/ft, then 90deg, then another 90deg. Without knowing what the final torque spec is, there's not really a way to test it.

Can I buy just one headbolt?

It may be the profile gasket leaking. Tightening a head bolt wouldn't help with that. Either that, or maybe the valve cover gasket is crapped out & oil is running down the side. That is really common.

Definitely not the valve cover gasket. I could be the profile gasket.

I put the head on ~10k ago. I tightened all of the headbolts down to spec and haven't touched it since. Some have mentioned that I should have retorqued them, but I thought it was unnecessary with the stretch bolts. Is it possible a head bolt has loosened up?  What's the final torque spec on the head bolts after the two 90deg turns?

Yeah, there's just one head bolt by the oil passage there. It's the front passenger one.
