I assume not, but will this mod post any problems for cars running a modified chip?
I will be installing a 93 octane Mark D chip in my 318is soon and would not want to discover any incompatibility between the chip and this mod.
Also, performance gains, if any?

TIA

Having done the Oktoberfest DE in my 318is yesterday, I can vouch for how well balanced the car is. Sure it was lacking in the power department, compared to the mostly newer and I6's bimmers out in the track, but when it came to the tight turns that is where the lightness came into play. My instructor was amazed at how well the car handled.
Ripping through the track at red line almost the whole way, that is fun!

M42 Buyer's Guide / Talk about your buying experience

Like most people here, I found mine in Craigslist.

1991 Alpineweiss, no sunroof, with 179,497 in the non-working odometer. The car looked good in the pictures, but the description indicated that the car had overheated and might need a headgasket. Listed price was $1,000.

I contacted the seller and arranged to see the car. I was the first one to contact the seller and first one to see the car. First impression of the car is that it had the dings and scratches you would expect from a car with 179,XXX miles. Checked the fluids, looking for mix of oil and coolant, and found no mix. Attemp to start the car failed due to a discharged battery, but since I was driving my M3 i was able to use the battery to get it started. Once the car started, the engine sounded quiet and revved well. After being idling for 5 or minutes it reached oprating temperature and then started to creep up to the hot side. Shot down the engine and started negotiating with the seller. We settled for $800, in part because I was driving a "similar" car and I would take good care of the car.

Towed the car back home and after reading up on this forum regarding cooling systems issues and doing some tests, I decided to change the thermostat before commiting to replacing the headgasket. Upon removal of the T-stat I see that it was mounted incorrectly by the "mechanic". Replaced it with the new t-stat and voila, now I have a new car. The car had recently replaced starter, alternator, bilstein shocks, clutch, water pump and t-stat. Also, based on how the engine looks, clean and does not leak oil, and the way it feels I don't think it is the original engine, however, I have no paperwork to prove it.

In the 3 or so months that I have owned the car, I have put about 3,000 miles on the car, including a 250 miles each way trip from Dallas to Houston on a 100 degree day, and not a hiccup. The 318 is now my daily driver and I am surely enjoying the gas savings compared to my previous DD a BMW 540 with a V8 engine.

I already see many of the parts that will be replaced from my M3, finding a new home on the 318. Ahhh, the possibilities....

General Topics / Another 318is saved!!!
« on: June 15, 2007, 08:49:33 AM »
This is my first post here.

About a month ago I was browsing the local Craigslist classifieds and spotted a 1991 318is for sale. The owner claimed that the car had overheated due to a bad thermostat and he took it to his "mechanic" to get the thermostat and water pump replaced. Even after the thermostat the car continued to run hot. He indicated that there was no oil/coolant mixing and no coolant coming out of the tailpipe, but that the "mechanic" had told him that the headgasket needed replacing. He had the car in his garage for about 2 years, hoping to fix it, but finally his wife (wimp) forced him to sell it. Enter me.

I towed the car home and started thinkering with it. I confirmed that the car indeed was running hot and I also noticed that upper radiator hose was getting really hot and the lower radiator hose was remaing cool. I fulhed the radiator, thinking that it might be some air in the system, but that did not work. I then ordered a new t-stat, I have read that these somtimes come defective, and when I removed the t-stat cover i noticed that it was installed backwards. I dobn't know what they put on the new t-stat with, but I almost had to destroy it to get it out. Once out, I replaced it with the new unit I had purchased and now the car is running like a champ. The temp gauge does not go over 1/2, even with the AC on at idle in a hot Texas day.

Overall the car is in good shape with some good things and some not so good things. But I will continue to sort it out and bring maintenance items up to date. looking forward to using this as my daily to start the much needed upgrading to my E30 M3 and to keep the miles low on my 540i, not to mention the decrease in the gas bill.

I found a lot of useful information in this site as well as some useful links that helped me fix the car. I will be hanging around and asking questions in here for a while.

Pictures of the car will be up over the weekend, once it gets its first bath.

Later!
