Title: Alternator upgrade for 95 318i
Post by: PoorBoysRacing on October 27, 2009, 11:03:56 AM
so my alternator is on its way out the door, (dead battery and belt squeeling when i flip on hid's) and i want to put a higher amp one in its place since i plan on adding hid fogs ect. well highest i can find is a 105a, which ive been told i already have. so my question is has anyone done a higher amp upgrade and if so where did you find your alternator and off of what car did it come from?

thanks in advance:D,
Joe

I will put it to you this way -Stinger has a very powerful 400 amp that costs a pretty pennie, but there's another company called High Amp Alt's on the web that may run a little less.

If you gonna go to a higher amp I wouldn't go to crazy unless ur gonna re wire the car to handle it as I have seen many ppl do this and end up with no car cuz of an electrical fire. Definatly would recomend doing alot of reserch before doing somthing like this.

Oh yeah. Research. I upgraded to an 90 amp. I only have some extra guages attached. I don't plan to put in one of stupid vibration sound systems. If I wanted an extra 500 pounds of dead weight in my car just so it sounds good, I would add a JDAM.

I ran a 2 wire GM 150 amp alternator for 6 years without any problems. Pretty easy to modify the stock mounting bracket to the gm alternator, and then you just need the stock pulley. use some washers to space the pulley properly once you have the brackets made.

This doesn't make sense.

what part doesn't make sence? I've seen alot of ppls cars engine harness melt or burn up due to them putting in a exsesivly large stereo and then needing a bigger alternator.

All I'm sayin is reserch it cuz it's a shame to destroy ur car because you just go and throw parts at it and have no idea of the out come. Same like goin and putting a turbo on and nothing else gets done and then your wondering why it blew up.
