Title: Fog Lights
Post by: chunner on October 20, 2009, 06:04:16 PM
Hi. New here. After having an e36 for the last 5 years I just picked up a 91 318is. The car does not have fogs and I am wondering what I would need to do to install them. Or if there is a DIY someone could point me towards. Thanks in advance

I'd figure the car is pre-wired.  Should be two large blue two-prong connectors in the front facia.  IIRC they're square with one corner angled off.  I can snap some pics if you like.

I'm thinking that it's a dealer option & you can just add a switch & lights for the package deal.

Hi Chunner,

My 91 318is does not have fogs either. I bought some fog light housings off of ebay and threw a new set of lenses on them. So far as I can tell, my car is not pre-wired, so my plan is to wire it myself. I bought a fog light switch and hacked the plugs for it and the housings out of a donor car. All that is left is to wire it to the switch and the fuse block.

I'll take some photos and write up a DIY as soon as I get it done.

The car is pre wired, they are tucked up behind the lower valance near the headlights.  The wiring is there for the switch tucked up near the airbag computer and all you need it the lights, the relay and the switch and install two fuses.

Make sure when you get a factory fog light switch that is right under the headlight switch, buy a new one.  I bought a used one from the junkyard a few months ago and it fell apart like my old one did.  I think I paid $78.00 for a new one at Bavarian and it's working fine.  I really think it might be pre-wired for the fog lights already.  I was lucky that mine already had them when I bought it two years ago.  I'd like to have cruise control and I'll be happy.

They all came prewired - no point in having separate wiring harnesses for cars ordered with or without foglights, in the long run it is cheaper for BMW to just throw the harness in. You have to dig around, but it is there. I had to drop the ABS brain to get to the connector in the dash.
