Title: So what should I EXPECT to pay for parts for a cam chain RR
Post by: Ramblin MAn on October 19, 2009, 07:05:08 PM
I always new the cam chain sounded a little sloppy in the M42 I have in my e21, but until I got my 318is I had no idea how bad it was. The 318is sounds brand new with no slop anywhere. The e21 sounds like it has no rails in it at all. I drove it up my buddies shop where I will tear into it but I was just looking at prices and wow, what I saw was terribly expensive, I could buy a motor from one of you guys, have it shipped here and swap it for less than the total I had for just the cam chain/sprocket/guide R&R.

So apparently, I'm not looking in the right place. I haven't even cracked open the valve cover yet so I have no idea what may need replacing. I did put a new tensioner in 30 miles ago so I know that's good. It made no difference.

What I am looking for are typical expect to pay prices on parts so I know I'm not shopping in the wrong place. I'm assuming chain, gears, rails, gaskets and seals. Don't need any consumables etc..., just the replacement parts.

From everything I've read ,and I plan on doing this next spring , just parts will be at least $500.00 dollars.
There was a post that had all the part numbers and prices the guy paid.

Yes, expect $500-$600 in parts.

That's with all the gaskets, sprockets, chain rails, the chain, tensioner, plus water pump and thermostat.
