Title: BMW cycle throttle bodys?
Post by: jonboy318is on August 06, 2006, 04:41:43 PM
how come in all the ITB setups. no one has used any throttle bodys off a bmw motorcycle?

 is this even possible?

I don't have a clue. A 900cc twin throttle body could be the equivalent of a 1800 cc 4-cylinder unit. Possible areas requiring fabrication could be bolt patterns and throttle linkage/cables. Plus you can get a setup ready to bolt on.

I think Tim_s used motorcycle parts for his ITB setup, which look friggin fantastic btw.

...and the finished result:

holy crap that is hot, ditch the power steering and that would pretty much be the engine bay I am dreaming of now.

Could you run individual filters on those?

Can we get more info on that setup as far as parts source, etc.?

do you not have ABS?
and I would also like to know about parts and such

Most of the ITB setups i've seen did use Motorcylce Throttle boddies. But they used them from like ninjas or some other sport bike. Probably cheaper to use those rather than to use bmw motorcyle throttle bodies.

^ yeah, Tim used s50 throttles.

And you could use individual sock filters if you were running management that used a MAP sensor. as seen above, Tim is using a MAF.

Lots of people adapt bike throttles to cars, have a search around the net, theres a fair bit of info around.

The advantage of them is that the majority of them connect using clamped hose, as opposed to being 'bolt on' units, which require more fab work.

yeah thats right, but im using MAP (running MS for squirt and spark) not MAF, the MAF is on there just because I designed the airbox etc to run with one and had it spare so used it rather than buying another extension pipe to go between the airbox and filter.
bike throttle bodies would also be a pretty cool way to go, may actually prove more straightforward.
I could run just socks and no airbox, but I wanted to keep noise levels down and get some good cold air in there. the airbox, inlet pipe and filter etc make a huge difference to noise levels. also the trumpets are curved to clear the brake servo etc and so there's not much gap in between the mouths of the trumpets meaning that socks would be hard to fit and would interfere with one another. while talking about MAP sensors and ITBs, its worth noting I may end up using alpha-n once the cams are in as people report dificulties in mapping using MAP with ITBs and long cam durations as the changes in manifold pressure can be negligable despite the throttle position being quite different. at the moment I'm not having these kinds of problems though, the remaining issues for me at the moment are that the fuel rail still needs some work as cable ties to hold it in place are hardly professional or factory looking, and the FPR needs welding up and a remote one fitting as I can't quite get full throttle at the moment as the ITB linkage hits it.

I don't have ABS - its fairly uncommon on UK 318is cars, and I'm keeping the power assistance as I'm hardly worried about the potential few bhp it may suck up and I have to park in the city etc. The car is a daily, not just a toy.
