they are M42.
Thanks mate. But what makes you say that it is M42? both cars were registered between 1886 and 1998!!! do you think they are using obd2 or obd1/
Thanks for your help

M42 uses the barndoor AFM meter...
M44 uses the cylindrical MAF....
So that's the biggest clue...
This looks like one of the last batches of M42 (with the plastic oil filter cap)

Anyway, here's a pic of M44 (spot the difference)

Thanks FABE... a few more questions. Are the late M42 Motors equipped with OBDII? Are they easy swap for e30's?
Are there any other physical difference to be noted between the M42 and M44?
Thanks for your help. Really appreciate it.

all m42's are obd1. M44 has longer stroke and bigger bore, 4 counterweight crank, internally mounted crank trigger wheel. There are many small differences but they are primarily the same engine besides electronics.

I'm planning to buy an m42 from an e30 318ti (year 1998) from japan. Unfortunately the guy didnt tell me whether its an m42 or m44. I just hope its an m42. I'll ask him to send me some pics.
I really appreciate your help. thanks man...
