Title: Swapping M44 (1998) into an e30 (M40)
Post by: oomesh on September 13, 2009, 02:38:15 PM
I would really appreciate if someone could help. I recently ordered a second hand m42 from a 1995 e36. But unfortunately, only an m44 from 1998 ti is available (complete engine with wiring and ecu). do you think this swap is possible for my e30 with current m40 engine? i've read that sensors are different, and i should cater for ignition bearings,...?
WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BET M42 and M44?
Kindly advice me.

Go m42 all the way. Its a .1 liter difference and Ive read the m42's are stronger internally than the m44, plus the m44 is OBD2, which is never fun.

if you go m44, engine wiring harness, ecu, possibly bcm, body wiring harness, etc... it could get very messy

if you go m42, engine wiring harness, ecu and possibly a few small things

With both of these I'm talking only of the electrical bits, not the mechanical bits as it would be the same for both, engine (duh), tranny?, exhaust, engine mounts?, steering bits?, I have never done an m42 swap into an m40 car (I think living in the US could have something to do with this) but there are a few people on here that have.

oomesh doesn't have his location listed, but given that he has an M40 in his e30 would it be fair to guess he is not in the US. Since OBDII is a US mandate and the European Union didn't adopt its version (EOBD) until 2001 maybe all the electrical hoo ha that plagues US swaps doesn't apply to him.

Most cars in EU have had OBD from early '90's.
