Title: CA smog compliant exhaust for 91 318ic
Post by: BlackBMWs on September 01, 2009, 09:43:19 AM
Any feedback for a CA smog compliant exhaust replacement for a 91 E30 318ic?  M42 motor.  PO had a quiet exhaust installed, but the rear three metal hanger/straps on the exhaust are torn.  The rear two straps were welded on to the muffler itself as the replacement muffler was 1/2 the diameter.  BTW, the mount points on the body all look fine.

I can have the mounts repaired or just replace H/W from the cat back.  I read folks using Magnaflows as weld in replacements, but don't know if they will pass CA smog inspections.

Any feedback on what you may be using?  for the Vert, I'm not interested in increasing it's sound, but wouldn't mind a healthier tone.

Thanks!

Yes, I may just bring it in and have it repaired, rewelded.  I do have replacement OE straps and rubber hangers, however the diameter of the existing muffler is probably 2/3 of the OEM muffler, hence the OE straps are too large.  the PO had the big straps welded on the little muffler...

Thought it would be a good time to just see if I should replace the whole thing as long as it wasn't costing an arm and a leg.

Fresh exhaust hangers and hardware always makes stupid noises go away too :)
