There is a seal on the shifter. It's a little one, about .75" in diameter. The other culprit which you should do since you're looking at it is the tailshaft seal. They are about $2 or $3 each. Tailshaft may be aproblem as the nut on it is sometimes hard to get off. You may want to do it when trans is back in car so you can use the engine to hold against it.
Hot tip on putting the trans back in. It will either pop right in OR will be a PITA. Put studs into 2-3 holes to use as guide pins.

yeah i just replaced those so i guess it could have been them, but why would it get all over the top of the tranny?

I have both of these seals to put in my car but haven't done it yet. The tailshaft is a slinger. I've got trans oil all over the place including a little on the floor pan. I got the seals because the leaking fluid softens the rubber bushings that hold the exhaust bracket on.
I just noticed the shifter. How do you get it off to replace the little one.

the little sleve around the selector shaft joint comes off and you can push out the pin, you will know what im talking about when you are there
