Title: Help! Please MAF

Today I took off my mass air-flow sensor and sprayed it with special MAF cleaner. And now it stopped working? WTF? Does anyone have any idea what might have happened? I followed the directions on the can to the letter!

Please help, I really have to have this car running for school and work on Monday.

Any ideas will be appreciated!

Sorry, what would you like me to be more specific about?

If I start the car, it starts, but the RPM's go way up and then tumble way back down, so far that the engine has a hard time running until it just cuts off completely.

This is where I am humble and admit I don't know how to check the codes. The other vehicles I have worked on all have OBD 2.

Get your hands on a multimeter. Search the FAQ section for the wiring diagrams. Determine the correct pins on the AFM connector, and check the resistance while you manually open and close the barn door. It should be a steady and never have any breaks.

A second thought could be that your throttle position sensor is bad, which sounds more realistic given your symptoms. You check it the same way as the AFM, find the correct pins and check resistance while you open and close the throttle.

If you do end up with a bad AFM, I have an extra that I could sell you.

Thanks for all the replies!

It is like the computer does not recognize the MAF, so I reset the computer, took off my negative battery cable, put the MAF and everything back in place, then waited about 5 mins while I worked on something else, and then re-attached the battery cable, and the computer decided it accept it, even my check engine light went out, and it sounded like the engine was idleing fine, then I revved the engine to around 3,000 RPMs and it revved and then died right after revving, this happened twice, and then it revved fine, and I drove it a few miles and it seems to be fine, I don't think I understand at all.

But I think it is ok to drive to work tomorrow. ^__^

Does this make sense to anyone? =P

Sounds like a vaccum leak. See if you have a leak around the hoses just after the MAF. Make sure to tighten everything down. I hope you get it running for school tomorrow. Good luck.

If the car is dying like that, it wouldn't be a vacuum leak. The car wouldn't want to idle and would want to die under deceleration. Just get a multi-meter and start checking things, check the TPS, the AFM, the CPS, the cam sensor, etc. Good luck.

I'm sorry for asking this, but you did remember to plug in the MAF when you put it back together? I've seen that happen (and done it too) so many times. People do a buch of work and forget to plug it back in.

I'm pretty positive that it isn't a vacuum leak as I have re-routed almost all my lines and know they are in good working condition. However, I did get it running for school. And sorry, but I'm still not sure how to check the code readings.
