Title: Engine mounts?
Post by: mikesjo on August 01, 2006, 08:07:00 PM
What are you guys using for engine mounts?

I'm debating the stock rubber ones or IE urethane ones? Pros/Cons?
The price of the urethane ones are cheaper than the stock rubber. Will the excess vibrations have negative wear and tear on the body though?

You want OE rubber on everything but suspension parts.

If you want a stiffer mount, there is a part number the guys on the list will respond with (I know...  :D ) that is a direct fit, but a slighly stiffer rubber than the 318iS.  It might be for the 320i or a 535 or something.  I can't seem to remember what it was exactly.

Guys, wanna chime in here.

I have stock mounts, and they are fine... I may do something different in the future...

denis and jay have... I think mounts from an E28...?

my engine builder recommended E21 'california' motor mounts... they are like, blue or something and very durable, but not uncomfortable.

maybe an E21 owner among us has some insight...?

also, someone here (d clay?) filled his stock mounts with urethane...

E28 535i mounts will bolt up with some slight modification as will E21 mounts which have slightly longer studs. bmwman91 and a few others have E28 mounts if I recall correctly.

Try the search button. I know for a fact this topic has been covered before.

That's it...  Yeah, the E28 mounts.

But, I have to agree with Febi.  I replaced mine with new OE E30 mounts and they are fine.  I don't think you need anything else unless your planning to do a lot of tracking.

Ok, guess I'll spend the extra money and get OE mounts. Where did you guys get yours? I'm trying to spend as little as possible :). The cheapest I've found so far is bmaparts.com for $82.91 :(.

you can call patrick at BMA and ask for a discounted price... sometimes it's cheaper than the website... also, sometimes, actually, I have had decent luck with vaheh@crevierbmw.com also.

Naturally, both west coast sources, and even w/shipping they are about 9000% cheaper than bmw of bayside (I am very bitter about our local stealership).

Maybe this might help:

E28 535i motor mounts are from 1985-1988, so hopefully u can order them if you are looking for upgrades.

Is meyle that bad? $40 for the mounts sound like a good deal don't they..I'm reading that right right?

What kind of modifications have to be done to the E28 mounts?

Ok that link I posted is most likely for an e36 318is motor mount...the p/n doesn't match on realoem, stupid arizona website. Argh. Seems like $82 from BMA is the cheapest.

How hard is it to modify the e28 ones? Is it safe and would an incompetent mechanical person like me be able to do it? I like their price of $17/each, lol.

Most likely will just get the OEM ones.

I just sent an email to autohauz about the discrepancy, we'll see what they have to say.

I'm going to _try_ and use the E36 is motormounts i've got from the donor car. The motormounts are so expensive because they're hydraulic, they're not just a hunk of rubber (like on my M40 and on M20's).
The motormounts from my e36 donor are the original from '94. :D Hopefuly their still in good shape.

Just got an email back from autohausaz and they say that the correct motor mounts can be obtained by searching under the '91 318i model.

Oh man, forget those M42 ones.  Yes, the ride is a LOT more comfy with the nice hydraulic ones...but ONE of the M42 stockers costs more than two of the E28 ones.  I will not lie, after puttin on the E28 ones, you will probably be pissed.  I was for about 2 days because everything that could rattle DID.  Well, the lighter flywheel really reeeeally didn't help, so with a stock FW it might not be so bad.  It was well worth it though.  It eliminated so much bogging...the throttle response was phenomenal.  I have done it on both of my 318iS's.

Enjoy.

My car doesn't shake much at all right now really. I wouldn't want it too, lol.

I won't buy parts from Autohauz AZ anymore.

They were real cheap on the OEM engine sensors, but everything else they sent me was non-OEM quality.  I'd be very careful about what you get.  I'd spend an extra few bucks and know exactly what you are getting.

I order almost everything from Bavarian Autosport.

Yeah, it's often more expensive, but the stuff is all OEM and I've never had a problem with them.
