Title: Demolished Fuelpump inside tank

so, as the title says, found out that my fuel pump was completely demolished in my tank after a complete engine stall.. is this a common thing to happen ?.. its on a e36 m42 -94. was this related with that my car was really sluggish and so on before it broke ?  and a other question, anyone who got any suggestions about what fuel pump i should buy now ? :)

16-14-1-182-842-M82 Electric Fuel Pump, 318i/is/iC (thru 12/94)from pelican parts.  I run a 2nd fuel filter, because yoooou never know what can get in your tank.
