Title: Is there any way to get a six speed?
Post by: Burt_318iS on August 16, 2009, 07:37:04 PM
Is there anyone who has done a tranny swap for a six speed, hopefully an M3 tranny? I've been searching the site for a while and found nothing, maybe i'm missing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check with Zionsville Autosport.  They might have a conversion that would work for you.

Sure, the Euro E36 M3 six speeds will bolt up to the engine.  You'll need to fab a trans mount maybe, as i'm not sure if you can slide the stock one far enough back to accommodate it.  You would also need to modify the driveshaft.  You would also need to modify the shifter linkage.  Also, I doubt there is room in the tunnel.

You could also do a unit off the S54 engined cars.  Same issues as above and you'd also have to change the clutch disc.

Also, you could do a 330/Z4 six speed.  But they are a cheaper unit but more compact.  Probably easier to fit in the E30.  I think you'd also have to change the whole clutch and flywheel do the 330 style stuff in addition to the issues above.

Either way it's a waste of time.

sorry i forgot to mention that it's an E36 i don't know if that will change anything,   if there is more room or anything. your replys are much appreciated.   I really want to go with an M3 6-speed and im willing to do some mods if the bolts will be the same. so thank you again for your help and if being an E36 makes a difference please let me know.

The E46 M3 6 speeders are more robust compared to the E36 M3.. Then again, the M42 has less torque so it shouldn't be a big issue, unless if you have plans to drastically increase the HP.
