Title: Custom-made RHD E30 318is extractor
Post by: fabe on August 03, 2009, 09:38:50 PM
Continuation from HERE: http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8782

My modified extractor has been diagnosed to have mini leaks from various joints, so decided to custom made a new stainless steel extractor from scratch.

and here are some of the photos:

#1 - work in progress.

#2 - almost done

#3 - Installed

#4 - made to clear the steering coupling

#5 - Stock RHD E30 318is extractor

#6 - my old extractor (modified from a E36 318is RHD extractor)

Initial Review:
The low end torque has increased significantly. the car does not hesitate in 2nd gear going from 1000rpm to the redline when I WOT.. The car just go... Maybe the LHD stock extractor has even better throttle response. I wouldn't be able to tell as there's no LHD E30 318is here for me to sample.

It's also smoother at the upper rev range.. Damn, should have done this much much earlier...

If anyone interested, can probably get the exhaust specialist to make a few sets at a better deal.. Only issue would be the freight charges from Malaysia..

Beautiful piece.  I love that you call it an "extractor."  Add me to the list if they don't turn out to be exorbitantly priced.

This is made for RHD E30.. For ur E30, I assumed it's LHD, there should be more options available off the shelf..

is there much difference between the E30 headers, and the E36 headers?

There's a link on the first post of this thread. Click on it and you'll see the difference between the E30 318is RHD and LHD headers...

Even for the E36 318is, the LHD and the RHD headers are different too.. the LHD header flows better too..

Here's how the E36 318is LHD header looks like:

and this is a modified E36 318is RHD header... pipe 1 and 4 has been modified but 2and 3 untouched before the Y joint..

LHD header has pretty much almost-equal length pipes. but the RHD header is far from having equal length pipes.

Made a few extractor for the few E30 M42 buddies here...

Laser cut flanges.

all the bits.

Purpose built jig

Was previously on 2" outlet, now it's running 2.5" SS pipe up till the centrebox, and then still on 2.2" to the rear... Still contemplating to go 2.5" all the way thru... Car feels good as it is, afraid that it might lose the necessary back pressure for lower rev range if I go 2.5" all the way...
Can feel better flowing thru out the rev range.... Feels better at the top end... Feels like the car goes faster towards 220kph on the speedo... previously, Vmax is about 225kph on the meter and 215kph on GPS... Have yet to try Vmax after this recent tweak...

Nice build! Is its lenght is the same like stock manifold? Why not four in to one? I'm looking for S42 exhaust manifold dimensions for my project.

Not sure what is the length for the stock manifold. Anyway, most aftermarket manifolds are for LHD... This one is customised to clear the RHD steering coupling... And also due to space constraint, kinda difficult to do a 4-1... But I have no complaints for this 4-2-1 design, at least everything looks smooth flowing or as good as it gets....

Is it calculated for any rpm? I'm thinking on custom manifold also. What formulas have you used?

No particular formula. Just work within the limited space available.. The extractor was done by a local exhaust specialist.. I just 'supervise' and give suggestions. Wanted to have them equal length but not possible... But it's still miles better than the modified RHD E36 318is manifold or the stock E30 318is manifold (See pic below)

For the engine in my post (http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8343) I was advised to use primaries of 45" long from head flange to start of collector for a 41 header.

And how do you bolt up the downpipe to the cat-converter?
Title: Custom-made RHD E30 318is extractor
Post by: fabe on August 27, 2010, 09:16:19 PM
it's not a direct bolt on replacement...  I have change the pipe from 2" to 2.5", feels better than when it was running 2"..
Anyway, here's a photo..

Hi,
I'm interested in a set of these.
I've got a RHD e30 318is.
Is there any word on pricing/shipping to Australia?

Thanks
