I've been hanging around and posting for a couple of weeks so I thought I'd go ahead and introduce myself. A friend of mine and I recently purchased a 1991 318i that we are slowly turning into a dedicated autocross/track car with the probable ultimate goal of running in the SpecE30. That is probably several years off, but we run our first autocross next week. The car is in fairly good shape considering its ownership history. We bought it from a co-worker who also bought from another of our co-workers. She bought it used several years ago and barely maintained it. The other guy bought it from her when the fuel pump died and he's been running the crap out of it for the last year. He was feeling the need to replace the clutch and didn't want to spend the money so we bought the car from him for a very good price. So, it needs a clutch, the suspension is very tired, the paint is in horrible shape and it's got some rust issues in the trunk wells. So far we've replaced the thermostat, changed the oil (Valvoline Max Life Synthetic, no leaks!!) and generally cleaned it up. We hope to get the rest of the driveline fluids changed and get the suspension replaced in the next couple of months. I'll keep you guys posted as to our progress as we go along.
As for me, this is my second BMW. I'm the original owner of a 1998 318ti that I bought when I was stationed in Germany(Army). I've been autocrossing it fairly successfully in our local BMWCCA(National Capital Chapter) events for several years now. It's a great car and I love it. And it's just similar enough to the E30 that I'm comfortable with tackling projects on this new car. I'll probably have lots of questions for you all and you've been very helpful so far. Someone on the 318ti Yahoo group suggested this forum to me and I'm very glad that it's here. It's been a great resource so far.

Sweet man! Glad you picked up a 318i and saved it! Post up some pics when you get back from the auto-x event!
Will you be running the car with the tired suspension, or do already have something ready to install?

Frankenstein say, "More M42's - good!"
Most foks upgrade and mod when they need to replace stuff. If it needs a clutch, it's a good time to do a lighter flywheel. Search for M20 flywheel.

Dude,
We're going to run it as is this time. It should give us a good baseline and some insight into the potential of the car. I'll try to get someone to take pictures.
Clay,
If I read the Spec E30 rules right you have to retain the stock flywheel. If you know different, please let me know. BTW, Austin rocks. I love the Gingerman.
I'm going to try to put some pictures of the car as it is now on here if I can figure it out.
