Okay first of all you will need a reverse light switch which you can get for around 12 dollars. Once you have it jack up the car on the drivers side and crawl under a little more than halfway its on the driverside of the tranny up real high.
you will see 2 wires hooked to it. just get a firm grip on the end of the wires and unhook them one by one. Take a wrench and take it off and replace everything back. easy easy lemon squeezy. No mechanics needed!

Thanks for the post though, sometimes people dont ask for help cause things "seem" so eazy they dont wanna look dumb, but this will help .. hopefully

I think this is my first post here - kinda late to the party. I have to replace the reverse light switch on our '91 318is. Is there a seal ring? I bought the switch but didn't look in the box for a seal ring. What torque value for tightening?
Thanks,
Scott Miller

Mine was on the passengers side and was missing the fuckin wires! I had to wire the switch back to the connection under the shifter and I had reverse lights. Sorry, had to chime in.

I never got back, but i replaced mine and i only hand tightened it with a box wrench. But i still have no lights..

check the connection where the shifter is. Take out the shift boot and look for a white connector. Mine was just ripped off. This link helped me put:
