Title: What fabrication skills do YOU possess?
Post by: bmwman91 on July 24, 2006, 01:59:10 AM
Alrighty party people, let's see what's up here!

Just for fun, AND to get an idea of who can do what on here!  Just as important as sharing experiences, sharing skills can help us develop some new things as well!

All I need to learn is composites.  I've fixed lots of surfboards before, but I doubt that counts...

Gas (I pretty much only using for making two pieces of metal out of one at this point)
MIG
TIG aluminum, steel, stainless and most alloys of these
Stick although haven't touched one in 5-years
Plasma Cutting
Tube bending, cutting, coping, fitting (all cage bending done in house by me on a JD2 Model 3 'mandrel' die bender)
Manual mill... although it's been a while
Manual lathe
Right about the time I got into composites I made a good friend who works with them at the highest grade levels. So I lost what little skill was there.
Hammer metal forming
It's been a long time since I've used a real spray gun... but I can do it

Oh... and although it's not listed, I haven't found much wiring I can't do. OBD2 engine swaps into cars from the 70's using the old factory fuse box :D I've got standalone wiring setups down to one days work.

Tools in the shop:
Miller arc welder
Millermatic 175 MIG
Miller Synchrowave 180sd TIG
DeWalt chop saw
Tube notcher
JD2 Model 3 bender
Bead-Form bead roller
Drill press
7x10 minilathe
Gas torch
A pile of Makita angle grinders

And my father and law lets me use his Plasma Cutter and 12x36 lathe when I need them.

No advanced fabrication skills (just general fabrication - welding, gas cutting....) but I am a Qualified Toolmaker (plastic injection moulds and press tools) so I can use the full range of hand tools and workshop machinery....Milling, Turning, Surface Grinding, Jig Boring, cylindrical gringing, etc....
it has been quite a while since I have earnt a living on the tools but some skills you just dont lose....
For example, my last car project :)

Hey, very cool!  The template on your site should make for a good starting point, too.  Unfortunately the US cars have an ABS unit right there...fitting the PS resivoir in there is probably still doable though.  Very nice fabbing work there!

I know the welder's name, and the sheet metal guy's, too! TIG welding is almost an art form and takes years to develop. I have designed a lot of stuff, including a complete IMCA chassis, that other people have built. Chassis setup, gear selection, and tires are the areas that I am good in. Also AN line make-up and laying out dry sump oiling, fuel and cooling systems.
I have been team manager and crew chief on circle track and TransAm cars and have also been a pit lizard just to be in the middle of it all.
I know just enough about lathes and boring mills to be dangerous. However, I am certified on the file, sandpaper, and hammer.

yeah I hated the way the PS Reservior just sat in the middle of the engine bay looking ugly...and for a couple of dollars for hose and fittings and a hours work it was well worth the effort.  Then incorporating it into the CAI hid it even better.
Using IX washer bottle tidied the enginebay up even more.....Next thing is to look at moving the coils and re-routing the air con pipe (probably run it further forward before cutting across to the engine)
I realise that I can never get the enginebay completely uncluttered but every little bit helps.

Well be sure to look through the Coil-on-Plug threads.  Myself and a small number of others have done it, and I will be making more brackets very soon.

Here are the 5 pages of my two attempts.  The first 3 are my unsuccessful try at using the stockers, but they are just too big.
http://www.e30tuner.com/projects/cop1.htm

Here's the final revision of the holding bracket...well, final for now in that it fits perfectly.  Powder-coated black would look nice, I just do not have the facilities to do it myself.

but I will not go off topic in this thread - will pick your brains in the other thread.

Haha alrighty to keep things on the topic of fabrication skills & the like:

Anyone found a good way to do powdercoating 'at home?'  Can a conventional oven get hot enough to fuse the particles?

I can bend cardboard really well. I can duplicate the airbox above for fraction of the cost and time.

I wouldn't call stuff I do fabrication "skills" but rather fabrication "knowledge". To me, it can only be called a skill if you do it full time or as part of your job, or if you're really good at it.

I know a lot of people with welders that think they can weld. That is true to a certain extent but not everyone's a decent welder.

Yes it will just need longer if your oven canīt even do the required temps
I have all the stuff at home but havenīt used it really, just to test on a pipe, wich worked well but should have had more temp and stayed in a little longer :)

I feel comfortable in a wood or metal shop, but hardly have high-end skills.  I do have photo skills to shoot the stuff you guys make    Just send your projects my way!

Gunni...does this wreck an oven of you ever plan on putting food in it again?  LOL

I liked the shutter/shudder relationship when it came to my E30!  But I am a pro-photographer, so for you fabricators, I really will photograph your new products you plan to sell!  We'll just work out the return shipping....
