Title: Cruise and auto sunroof conversion compatibility?
Post by: Agent Orange on July 18, 2006, 02:06:55 PM
I'm looking to retrofit cruise into my 91 318i, and convert my crank sunroof to auto. I can't seem to find definitive answers about the compatibility between cars. It seems to me that the sunroof should work in any e30, but do I need the cruise from another m42 engine, or will any late e30 do?

Any info is appreciated.
Thanks.

Cruise control has been discussed a few times, and basically it is $$$$ and a LOT of time even if you know what you are doing (which nobody does yet).  As far as I know no M42 came with cruise control/was not an option.

The sunroof has been done, parts were like $400.  I personally have not done it, but folks years ago on other boards did.

I installed cruise in my car.  You can read some info on it in this thread:

There really isn't all that much involved.  I have about $140 into it all.  Probally could be done cheaper if you have a salvage yard near you with the parts.  I bought all mine from Al Taylor

The sunroof motor works from any E30 with an electric sunroof, i'll confirm next week if it works from an E36 as well, i'm going to install an E36 sunroof motor in someones E30. It's 80% plug and play. :D

Would there be any advantage to an e36 setup over e30? I think the e36 ones are one-touch , are they not?

And Jake, thanks for that link. Looks like something even I could do, and I'm fairly inept with cars... looks like the hard part is just taking everything apart :P

No, the E34 ones are one touch. The motor from the E30 is the same as the one from the E36 after my inspection. I'll come back with proper observations after i install it.
Title: 318is cruise control

Hello,I also fitted cruise to my 318is,but I modified an E36 accel cable into my actuator. The 2 pin plug for the brake cicuit actually plugs into the major white plastic plug reciever behind the glove box and the factory e30 clutch bracket and switch will fit without modification, just patience.

One-touch is easy, FWIW.  Pick up one of those Autoloc units for the windows - they work for the sunroof as well.

I had both in my 318iS. Took the cruise out to put in the 318i though :p
