hey guys... i got a 91 318is i wanted to know what i can do to get power out of my M42 without spending over 2grand and without using and forced induction.. if you can please tell me that would be great thanks !!
Looking to get like 150 - 160hp hoping to get into drifting next summer!

Ditch the power steering, electric cooling fan, 3.73 LSD, 22# EV6 injectors, ebay chip, high beam sealed intake, cat back if you have cash left over.

Put a 2.5 in ;)
But otherwise, what tjts1 said :D I can speak for #0280155712 injectors, he can speak for others. For that money (are you doing the work yourself?) you should be able to cam it too. I know someone who's got a very nice cam for sale in the UK, if you're from the UK.

im doing all of the work myself.. also i got my high beam out for the intake if anyone can direct me to a good design for the heat shield and what type of piping i should get to push the intake closer to the front?
-
You already have a perfectly sealed heat shield in the stock airbox.

yeah but i took the stock filter out and now i have a cone filter..
Also where can i get the 22# EV6 Injectors you're talking about also what is the LSD you are talking about lol...
-
I would reinstall the stock airbox. Search for "Mustang injectors" thread. LSD = limited slip differential.
good luck
-
Alright thanks alot !!
One last thing, i heard that taking out the heat plate from the intake manifold also helps increase power as well as getting a mark D chip for my car for 93 Octane..
-
What country are you in?
I gave an injector number above. As said, look at the mustang injector thread, its not just mustang injectors on there! My ones are 2.5 v6 vauxhall vectra ones...
-
i live in the USA... alright thanks
-
I would also make sure that everything is serviced and working right!
Like good new oil,new spark plugs, good new airfilter,...
Clean the whole intake part of the car! There's a lot of gunk in there!;)
Things like a chip will do sh*t when your car isn't working right!
But that's just my 2 cents;)

wouldnt a 4.10 or even a 4.27 lsd be netter than a 3.73??
-
No because it forces you to shift more often which increases your acceleration times. With the stock 4.10 differential you have to shift to 3rd at 55mph and 4th before the end of the 1/4. A 3.73 on the other hand gets you to 62mph and you can complete the quarter in 3rd gear. Each shift ads between 0.5-1.0 second to your times.

I'll sell you a turbo kit for 2 grand and you can make over 200 at the crank.
I daily drove this setup.
-
lol no thanks Danny707 i saw that up for sale awhile back.. Also how would i go about getting a lower LSD

Yep - have to agree. Although the car is slower (except statistically), my 3.73 makes first gear worthwhile. Anything shorter essentially makes the car into a four-speed (unless it's a really steep hill).

tjts1 do you have a link to those injectors (22# EV6) you are talking about? Google gives me very different results. Webshop maybe?
TIA!

that makes since for straight line or 1/4 mi times, but in theory it seems for the track or auto x you would want the car geared lower to keep you in the power band more of the time. Im noob, so that is just my guess.
I went to the jy today to look for some parts and found a 3.73 med case lsd w/ 130k on it. I can get it for $100 so ill prob go back on Monday and pick it up. does that sound like a good deal? Are most of the M42 guys running 3.73?
Also, what is the % lockup for these oem lsd diffs??:)

I like my 3.64 small case specifically for autoX because I never have to use 3rd gear and I can keep it in 1st gear through a lot of slower sections. With a chipped 7200rpm red line its even better.
The only reason I'm using a 3.64 small case diff is because I couldn't find a 3.73lsd in the local yard. Somebody in the area has take to buying up all the LSDs as soon as they hit the yard only to resell them on ebay. Fucking bastard. So yes, $100 for a 3.73 lsd is a great deal. I would be all over that like like stink on shit. Make sure to reseal the diff cover and replace the big bushing at the top with a solid M3 piece before you install it into the car. Its also easier to fill it up with oil before you have in the car.
Good luck

Awesome, thanks for the advice Justin. I will pick that diff up tomorrow.
Do you know the part #'s or have a link to a diy thread that shows what additional bushings etc i should replace? I bought this car for the learning experience, so most of the wrenching is new to me, but im determined to figure it out. Thanks again. -Matt

the LSD lockup is 25%, assuming everything is in good shape. A lot of them are a bit worn out by now.
The only main suspension bushings on the car are control arm bushings, rear subframe bushings, diff bushing, and trailing arm bushings. i have all AKG poly bushings on my car, from AKGmotorsport.com. Great parts, but its a little harsh. you can get pretty much the same thing with M3 offset control arm bushings, 70A poly subframe bushings, stock trailing arm bushings, and M3 diff mount.
Also be sure to check your rear shock mounts. those things always blow out if they are stock.
