Well, i just installed what I have been told is a Group N m42 chip (or copy there of).
It's peak hour traffic, so just had a quick blat around teh block :D
Not sure how much performance has been affected, but it feels a bit different. 1st gear not much difference, but second feels to have a lil more pull. But the most significant thing is the raised rev limit. From what i can gather it is around 7100 rpm, and she pulls all the way. The noise at 7000 is rediculous, the exhaust is so loud. haha.
Il take it out for a bit of a better test later tonight ... bit tis going to be pretty nice on the track. some of those tricky corners that aren't quite 2nd, yet not quite 3rd might be nice in 2nd with the extra headroom.
Oh, and im chucking it on a dyno monday, so il let u know any real results. I was gonna do before/after, but i didnt want to wait to put the chip in. hehe. and id rather do a short dyno run. Only prob is, my old dyno sheet is pre-exhaust, so any gains or losses seen monday will be exhaust/chip.

Does your car have O2 sensor feedback or no? I am interested in seeing the power results. Is the chip a simple little black/brown EPROM chip, or is it a bunch of stuff printed on a greenboard?

sounds good. i just ordered an ebay chip, most likely a dinan replica(?) and look forward to a new redline of 7k. i just worry, is this bad for my engine? on my wrx, since 2002 my brother and i have driven the crap out of the engine, shifting around/after/before 7k like 15 times a day easy, but we kept it up nice, synthetic, premium, all services, etc.. I just worry b/c my car is much older, i've been going through replacing all my terribly cracked hoses and fitting lose valve cover bolts, and do you think revving this high causes any premature wear?

I don't know a lot about the specifics of your chip, but my 2 cents relative to the stock chip:
if yer really getting going, friggin STAND on the throttle and shift right at 7000 rpms... the motronic has separate maps for part throttle and full throttle, and the full throttle map puts out a lot more oomph... going back and forth from full and part throttle tends to retard performance a bit.
shifting at 7k is *fun*!!

Welcome to the club. On stock motors, it basically doesn't make power all the way to, it just allows you to hold gears longer and make passengers go :eek: when you have a standard tach :cool: . no o2 feedback in-car. It was just a replacement eprom chip.
I can tell you it feels pretty nice. One of my concerns is in regards to the fueling. given that i have no idea what this chip really is, and what region it is designed for, i dont know if it will like the fuel i use. I always use the highest octane available locally, so it dont hink it will be an issue in regards to pinging, but it may just not be optimally tuned.
As previously mentioned, the best part is the raised rev limit for the extra headroom. From the looks of it, a flat 2-3 change now has an extra 10-15km/hr in second.
Between gear changes are great, the engine doesnt seem to drop out of the power band as much. It hits the next gear and keeps pulling. And there is def more power, cos i can feel the rear end get more slippery than usual when applying the throttle in corners.
As above, will update with dyno results monday.

LOL, well. Dyno was, interesting.
Max power increase was, wait for it 1.1kw!!!! hahaha. thats like, not even 1hp or something, hehe.
However, the overall increase was quite nice and consistent. Initially, there was a dip in power around 3000-3200rpm, this is now gone, and similar events have occured throughout the range. Also, AFRs have evend out.
So, for the price i got the chip for, i cant complain. Mid range is a better, and as i said, the 7000+ rpm is nice.
Now I'm wondering if the exhaust has maybe lost power. I remember DASC e36 people talking of power losses with aftermarket exhausts. hmmm, either way, Im not fussed. But, i was expecting more than 1kw. It certainly feels like more on the butt dyno. lol.

Well, just as an additional. I just got back inside from refitting my catalytic converter. It is interesting to note that my initial thoughts are that the power delivery is much more smooth, and the car no longer feels like it is going to rattle to death at 7000rpm.
so, maybe it is true, the m42 doesnt like being de-catted.
it also got rid of the annoying rasp from 2500-4000rpm, it just has a deep, more intake based growl.
