okay i picked up this 91 318is and haven been cleaning up the engine waiting for an alternator, when i dug out the starter i noticed that the area it goes into the bellhousing there was huge gaps below and above it like where a gasket should be
anyone know what i'm missing here? i dont see anything on pelican parts or parts geek so i'm at a loss, seems like there should be something covering that up

Is it the same way on the other side? Could be that they "trimmed" number 6 in the following diagram.

Or it just isn't there all together. Looks like whoever pulled the tranny last didn't reinstall the dust shield. Seems kind of trivial to pull the tranny just to replace the missing dust shields but it may be a good idea, they are kind of important.

yep thats what it looks like, the person who owned the car before me replaced the clutch and looks like they decided that was not an important part.
