So, I was at the yard last time and picked up a decent "premium" 325 under hood liner to hide all the rust and crud on the underside of my hood. I got all the clips and the hood liner for $10!
I had to hose it out a few times and let it dry as it was dirty. It's not perfect, but looks WAY better and I couldn't beat the price! :D
I waxed up the edges of the inside of the hood and installed it this weekend. I'm amazed at how much nicer it looks, and I think it's keeping my hood a little cooler too.

What do y'all think?

looks a hell of alot better than my stock one
-
looks like you have a damn clean engine bay too

yowza thats nice. I got crumblin dried up foamy stuff. Gets grey dust crap all over the engine- which provides just enough justification to not keep my engine looking like yours. Nice job...

Nice...did you have to take off the foamy stuff?

The foamy stuff was all removed when I bought the car. Just rust and glue residue, which is nicely covered by this "premium" hood liner!
I actually was going to replace them with the new foam liner pieces that originally came on the car, but started flaking before I put it on the car, so I sent it back. The 325 liner is much nicer!

what benefit does this thing provide aside from look

I found one from an 325. Now that I see you have done the same thing, tell me, hows the fit?
Are there any engine contact points that rub?
Is the hood insulated well enough that the paint is not affected?
Thanks,
Gary

Gary... I got one from the yard for $10, so I figured I'd give it a try, especially before I powder coat my IM and VC. So, if it rubs a little, no big deal. It's way nicer looking and that was the biggest thing for me... keeps a lot of the heat from soaking through the hood. The paint on my hood got a "dried out" look very quickly. Much improved in that respect.
It does rub a little on the very top front corner of the IM, but that's it from what I can tell. I'm very interested in maybe trying an E30 M3 under hood liner as that car has such a protruding intake (much like our cars), that it might have the correct spacing, but not sure. Unfortunately, it will be fat chance for me to find an E30 M3 under hood liner at a yard for $10.
I'm sure the dealer will want $100 for one, or maybe more as it's an M specific part.
(///M stands for Money, btw). ;)
If you want, I can take a picture of the area where it rubs, and maybe you can figure out a way to "modify" it a bit so it won't rub. Probably won't be that hard with the liner off the car.
Do you have all the little clips that hold it in place??
-
Nope on the clips! Have you an OE pn#? I figured it would rub on the IM. I will fit it and adjust accordingly. When you washed yours where there any warping or integrity issues?
Thanks!

Nah, washing it out didn't seem to cause any problems, but I let it sit flat to dry.
I'll see if I can get a PN on the clips... I got mine from the yard as well. You will want to push-in kind. The early cars have a screw in kind that is a royal PITA!
I think if you just roll up to the dealer, you should be able to tell them what you want and they probably have them in stock.

i dont think i have one, or its much less of material than the 325 one. i woud only put a heavier, nicer one on if my engine was as clean as yours..... :)
