Title: Crazy '91 318is idling problems
Post by: stacman on March 11, 2009, 11:33:31 PM
My car has been acting strangely, and it's been -40 here, and when I start it up it whines a bit, then once it has warmed up a bit it idles fine.

Then I go to drive it, and the car will run fine for ~5-10 minutes, at which point it may stop dropping the rpm (staying constant at 2k+ rpm) every time I shift gears, or it may start searching for idle. Fluctuating from 400-600 or 1100-1300 RPM.  It gets worse if I continue driving, because a CEL light will come on and the car WILL stall, if I attempt to restart it the engine will keep searching for idle and usually stalls again very shortly.

Now, I noticed when the engine starts having trouble idling my heat goes ICE cold. It also gets frigid any time I'm driving over 60 km/h. I'm thinking these may be linked? I'm starting to suspect vacuum problems. I've replaced the water pump and thermostat, had the heater core flushed, and replaced the cam sensor. Help!

icv.

the function of it may not be in tip top shape, and the cold just makes it worse.

check that out, clean it with tb cleaner, then get back to us.
