So, I've taken computer programming classes, and sorta know some C++...
I was wondering of someone could give me details about the Motronic... 175?
I have a '91 318iS... So it would have a 175, yes?
I know it uses EPROM, but how would I go about getting the data from that, or possibly even editing it?
What equipment do I need?

Check out the bottom half of this article.

Let me know if you can do that kind of shit.
edit: also some info on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EPROM)

Yeah...
Well, I could do the soldering and such, but I have no EPROM reader... I have only the stock chip, so the dual switchable chip mod would be essential... I think having a backup would be important, no? I don't think I have a Torx screwdriver either. Ha. Do you absolutely HAVE to have one to access the EPROM?
I'd like to look into getting into the BIN files, and possibly make an attempt at reverse engineering and editing them... Or whatever will be on it? I'm wondering what I need in order to be able to do that... And where I would get it... I'd like to do this stuff on my own instead of paying someone else, even though it will take me hundreds of hours, and probably will not be as good. :D
The point is that I'd be able to custom tune it to my special needs...
And whatever else, for "free." Frustration, parts, and labor not included. :p
So I know what EPROM to order, and what other things to look for, but where do I find a 27C256 EPROM reader? o.O

I already tried that...
Every link eventually dead ended...
This thread is the fifth on the search results.

Well...
I found a dead end.

If you are just starting this, i would recommend to buy chip from someone who really know what he is doing. It will be cheaper, trust me. Wrong values in wrong places destroy your engine sooner than you expect. I have done this about 20 years now, i use Winols software, sometimes free Motronic editor as well.
If you do not have programmer device you cannot do this.Suitable ones can be bought starting from 100$. i use this:

You can also use more modern eeproms insteadt of eproms. eeproms can be empty with programmer device just in seconds insteatd of UV-light eproms need.ou can use most 27C series eproms/eeproms, only think which is vital is the size. These older cars use 8K version and proms are with 28 pins. If you download MotronicEditor program you will get some BMW binary files with it to start practicing.
I have done mainly Porsche binaries but also my daily driver M40 powerd BMW 318I chip as well.
